Tá na síolta ag fás ~ the seeds for the Twite are growing

image

Tá na síolta a chur muid don Gleoiseach Sléibhe ag fás. Tá súil againn go mbeidh na plandaí sách mór san Fhomair chun an Twite a mhealladh chuig ár scoil.

The seeds we planted to encourage the Twite to our school are already growing. We hope the plants will produce seeds in Autumn for the Twite to eat.

The Twite

The Twite in Inver National School

The Twite

On Thursday last week a man called Derek McLoughlin came to our school to talk to us about a bird called “The Twite”. The Twite is a very small bird that nests in heather.

Derek told us about the Twite and about its habitat. It feeds on small seeds from flowers and plants. The Twite is a lot like other birds so you might get easily mixed up.

Derek showed us a clip about the Twite. It showed us that the Twite only lives in the coast of Mayo and Donegal.

At the very end of the day Derek put down some seeds in our garden so the Twite will come to our school some-time later this year.

I was very interested in learning more about the Twite. It was a great day.

Derek Mc Loughlin

On Thursday last the 13th of June Derek Mc Loughlin came to our school to talk about the Twite bird. A few pupils from Glenamoy National School came as well to watch.

First he showed us a PowerPoint on the Twites. It was really interesting. He showed us the difference between the Linet, the Red Pole and the Twite. It was really good.

After that he brought us outside to plant some seeds for the Twite to come and feed on it. Then we went to look at the different type of flowers.

Then we watched a short clip on the Twites . I really enjoyed the day and learned a lot.

Last Thursday a man called Derek McLoughlin came to our school to talk about a bird called a ‘Twite’.

Glenamoy school came too because they were learning about the Twite too like us.We learned many new things about the Twite. We learned what seeds it eats, where it makes its nests and how many breeding pairs there are in Ireland.

First when he came into the classroom he showed us a slideshow on the whiteboard . He named out many different types of birds like the Red Pole, the Linnet and the Twite. We then had a game of spot the difference between the different birds.

After that we went outside down to the garden where we plant all the seeds. He had these special seeds that he sprinkled on the soil and then covered them over with soil. There the seeds that the Twite will eat. I hope.

We then walked down to the back gate in the field to look for different flowers. I saw different flowers that I’ve never seen before or even heard of. After we saw all the different flowers we walked back into the classroom to go back over all the stuff we had seen.

I really enjoyed learning and listening to Derek today because now I know more stuff about the Twite then I did before. I hope he comes back again next year.

Last Thursday Derek Mcloughlin the ornithologist came to our school to tell us about the ‘Twite’.

We had a tiny bit known already but he taught us a lot more. First he showed us a slide show. It was really interesting.

Glenamoy school came as well because they are planting seeds to. But they are doing it themselves, Derek did it for us.

He showed us different sorts of birds. They were called the Red Pole and the Finch. The Red Pole is called that because his forehead has a red patch on his head.

He then brought us outside. We all watched him plant the seed for the Twite.

We went around the playing field looking for plants that other birds feed on. We had to go inside at two o’ clock because the younger students had to go home.

We watched a video clip when we went inside. It was really interesting.

I really enjoyed learning about the Twite and I hope I see them in our garden in a few months.

The Twite bird

A man called Derek came to our school talking about a Twite. A Twite is a type of bird that is nearly extinct. It lives in Mayo and Donegal and some other parts of the world .They make nests in the heather on mountains so nobody can hurt them. The man put rings on their feet so he will recognise the bird . They have brown legs and you have to hold them a special way. The man that came showed us some of the plants that Twites feed on like Sorrel,Forget me not, meadow buttercups, plantain, bird foot trefoil and much more flowers and plants. The mother and father collect the bird poo and drop it on the ground. The man took us outside and planted seeds in our garden. When they grow the Twites might give us a visit. Siobhán and Liam

A fun day with Declan from Science Ireland

imageDeclan Holmes from Science Ireland
On Tuesday , a man called Declan Holmes from Science Ireland came to our school. He did lots of things with us.

My favourite things were when he showed us rockets and let a ping – pong ball float on top of a hair dryer! At one stage Grace and Eoin had a rocket race across the classroom!

The rockets were really cool! He put a tablet in water and shook it around and then it blasted up to the roof! There was another rocket that was air powered. We would stamp
on it, it was called half a football. Then when we stamped on it , it would fly up in the air!

At the end of the day Me and Liam were called up to do something. We held tubes over our heads and span them faster and faster! It was really fun! It also made a sound.

I enjoyed Declan’s visit and I learned that science is in a lot more places than I thought!

Our first match was against Glenamoy all 6th class started first. This game was the best game we played because the score was 7-2.

Our next match was against Cearthrú Thaidhg. It was the same team that started the first game. They were really good at soccer and two of their players were really strong. Cearthrú Thaidhg got the first goal and then us it was a really good match. I came on at half-time. Leanne and Lorcan scored and then the score was 3-2 to us (Inver). But Ceathrú Thaidgh scored again and the game finished 3-3.

Binghamstown played us next and the same team started again. It was 0-0 in the first-half but in the second-half Lorcan conceded a penalty and they scored, it finished 1-0 to Binghamstown.

After we played Ceathrú Thaidhg we had to go to pitch 2 to play binghamstown they had a really good team. They won us 1 nil I was playing in forward but at half time I came off for Lisa because she didn’t play in any match and everyone had to get playing.

The score was 7-2 to us. It was a good game.

Our next game was against Ceathru Thaidhg. We started off with the same team and put on a few substitutes during the game. It was a tight game all the way through. The final score was 3-3. It was a good game. Our next game was against binghamstown. It was tight all the way through but unfortunately Lorcan gave away a penalty and they scored. It was a really good game but we lost.

On the 4th of June a women came into our school to make scones with us. She made soup with us before and it was delicious. We made scones to time, first all the little ones came into our room because she was doing it in there. We all went up in groups of six to go and mix the mixture.
She firstly go the ingredients which were, brown flour, butter milk, baking soda and salt. Then she got the six people to mix it one by one. When we mixed the flour, baking powder and salt she added the butter milk. Then we again mixed it again. It turned into dough and she flattened it out. After that she got a circle shaped thing that was shaped in a circle and would cut it into a circle. We all cut one and it would make around twelve circles. When that was done she put them in the oven, she already had the oven heated so she placed them in the oven.

After 10 minutes or more they were done we had a choice to either have them plain, with butter, with jam or with jam and butter together. I had just butter and it was lovely. After we ate them she learned us a song about scones. We had about three scones each. It was a really fun day. I hope she makes something else with us in a few months.

Making Scones with Màirín

On Tuesday a lady called Máirín came to the school to make scones with all of us. She came to the school last year to make homemade vegetable soup, it was lovely. But this time we made scones.

We went up in groups of six. They are easy to make the ingredients are:
Brown flour,
Baking soda,
Butter milk,
& a sprinkle
of salt.

There were four groups and in my group there was Liam, Amy,Lisa & I. We all got a go at mixing the dough. First she put eight ounces of brown flour then she put a flat teaspoon of baking soda and a sprinkle of salt. After that we poured the butter milk in and we all got a mix it was a bit stiff with the butter milk in it though. Then she put some flour on the table and flattened the dough out on the table. After that we got to cut out the dough with the scone cutter it was fun.

Then we put the scones in the oven for twenty minutes. The smell of them was lovely. I hope Máirín comes back again and makes something different, I really enjoyed cooking and hope we keep it up in class!!!
