Music Workshop with Mary Curran

Mary Curran from the Whistleblast Quartet came to the school to do a music workshop with the kids before the Halloween holidays. She spent an hour with the junior room first. We learned about volume control, the names of lots of different instruments and where they originated from, like the french horn, bongo drum, bells, cymbals, sleigh bells, cow bell, wood block and many more. The children really enjoyed it as they were actively involved the whole time and exploring with the instruments. At the end, Mary gave each child an instrument and they created an ‘under the sea’ sound. It was very interesting and so much fun! Here are some photographs from the workshop.

Music workshop with Mary Curran

imageLast week, a person named Mary Curran came to our school. Mary did a music workshop with us. There were lots of instruments like the French horn and a big bongo kinda thing. Also there were shakers and cling things. There were all the instruments.
We also had to shout our names out really loudly at first but then we had to be as quiet as a mouse.
It was a good day at our school.
In fact, it was the best day yet at the school.

Mary Curan came to my school last week. First thing we talked about was volume. Volume means to get louder and quieter. For instance if you turned it up the volume, the sound got louder and if you turned it down it got quieter.
Secondly, she did an exercise where we were like a volume button. When she pointed to us we shouted our names but only if you were near the top of the line and as we got nearer to the bottom of the line we got quieter and quieter, I liked doing that it was fun!
Next we got lots of different instruments and we did a nice tune.
Last we just played around with the instruments, then we did another tune it was fun!
I hope Mary comes again soon!

Today a lady called Mary Curran came into our school to do a music workshop with us. First junior infants to 2nd class went in till fist break then we went in.
First we copied everything Mary did. Then she told us about volume. Next, she showed us some instruments and she showed us the French horn. She got a tube the length of 20 tin whistles and made music from it. Then she gave us an instrument each and put us in groups. We did beats with them and then we changed instruments.
When we finished my class helped her put her things into her car. I enjoyed it.

We gathered around in a semi-circle in the middle room. Mary showed us loads of fascinating instruments. She even let us play beats with them. As far as I can remember, here are the names of some of them!
French horn
Bongo drums
Clash cymbals
Thats all I remember! I really enjoyed today and Mary was funny and kind. I definitely want to learn how to play the French horn!

Today a woman called Mary came to our school to do a music workshop with us. She took the small ones from muinteor Rachel’s class. We could here the little ones laughing from the middle room where the workshop was. We where going into the middle room after break. When break was over we went into the middle room and picked where we wanted to sit. She started off by showing us her musical instruments. She started banging on all the drums. then she said to clap. She made music out of clapping. She gave out instruments to everyone. We went in groups to do a big musical show. It was really cool and I wish she can come again before I leave for secondary school.

Ballinglen Arts Centre

On Tuesday all of the senior room went to Ballinglen Art Centre and Céide fields. We were gone all day!
The bus ride was scary going round the cliffs at Céide and the sea was really wild! First we went to the Ballinglen Arts Centre! A lady called Nuala welcomed us. We all hung up our coats and went down to the art room. Everyone brought a picture and an object. I brought a trophy and a picture of me and Big Ben!
Nuala gave us all a pencil and a gold/silver piece of paper! She told us to put waves in the picture because of the really wild waves we saw. So I drew a picture of me holding my trophy and a river behind me! Then I got a scratcher and scratched over all the lines. I had to go in the queue to put ink on my picture. It finally came to me! I used red ink! It came out really well in the printer and I was very happy with it!
We went to have lunch and then we went to look at some studios. Then we went to some studios, we went to an English lady’s studio first but all her work was packed up because she was leaving! The second studio had an American lady in it! She like to use different tools and colours. Her art was very nice. We said thanks to Nuala, and left to go home!
We had a very good day! I really enjoyed my day!! 😃😃😃😃😝😝😝🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟✨✨✨😹😹😹👹👹

ballinglen 2

On Tuesday, 20th of October, our big classroom took a visit to Céide Fields and Ballinglen Arts Centre!
First of all, we went to the Ballinglen Arts Centre in the middle of Ballycastle town. A kind woman took us down to the art room and showed us how to print photos that we brought with us. I brought a photo of me and my older sister Megan when we were younger! Firstly, we drew the picture on a gold piece of paper and then scraped into the lines that we drew. Then, we got our photos. After, we went over to a machine that you carefully lay your scraped photo on, put a soft piece of paper over it and turned the handle around until it went over the photo then we lifted it up and it came out really well! Then a woman showed us different paintings by different artists who have visited there before and they were wonderful!

My finished picture 😊🙊
Then, we headed to Céide Fields, situated beside St.Patrick Head and the huge cliffs overlooking the sea! Céide Fields is a triangular shaped building. Firstly, we sat comfortably in the movie area and watched a programme on Céide Fields history. Then we headed to outside at the back and the constructor told us a few bits of history, but, it started raining so we had to rush inside. She showed us around and there was models of people working in the olden days. It was very interesting!

Thats everything we done that day! It was an enjoyable day and I would love to go to both them places again! Thanks for reading, see you in my next post!

We had great fun carving out our pumpkin. All of the children from the Naíonáin Bheaga to Rang 2 got their hands dirty cleaning out the inside of the pumpkin! We described what it smelled like and we all suggested names to call our pumpkin. We had names like Scary Face, Mr. Pumpkin Head and Peter Pumpkin. We then put all the children’s names into the pumpkin and Paula closed her eyes and picked a name out to see who got to bring the pumpkin home. Ava’s name was picked out. She was so happy and decided to call him Mr. Pumpkin Head!

Oíche Shamhna an bhlian seo caite!

Chuaigh mé ag imirt bob nó bia le mo cholceathar. Bhí mé gléasta suas mar Nanny Mc Phee! An lá sin, d’íarr Mamaí liom móin a fháil. Nuair a chuaigh mé amach sa chlós, chuala mé duine ag béicíl. Nuair a d’fhéach mé suas ar an díon, bhí mo Dhaidí ar an díon gléasta suas mar phúca agus bhí masc ar a cheann! “Ó a dhaidí!” a bhéic mé. Bhí scanradh an domhain orm! Tháinig mo chlann amach agus thóg siad pictuirí dó!

Back-seat Kids

We have been reading Back Seat Kids by Terry McDonagh and we love it. Terry visited our school in June and we took a video of him reading some of his poems. This is
Back Seat Kids

BACK-SEAT KIDS
The back seats in our classroom are scratched, written on
and the legs are loose.
Front seats can never be back seats
and back seats can never be front seats –
they just can’t.
Back-seat kids are kept in more often. They wear baseball caps sideways, try to be cool and stick chewing gum under seats.
They spend a lot of time outside Mr Principal’s door waiting to be called in
for throwing a schoolbag over the fence,
a small child’s lunch
down the toilet, or
spilling paint in the art room.
But:
school back seats, cinema back seats, or bus back seats – all back seats
fill up first
because back seats are back seats
and the action is at the back
in the back seats yeh!
We are the back-seat boys,
back-seat people
in back seats.
Back seats are
cool!
The best seats
are back seats
for back-seat kids and kids from the back seats. Yeh!
