MATHS -Time

Did you know on Mercury, a day is two years long? Imagine all you could do in one weekend!

Did you know
Because light takes time to reach us, everything we see is in the past. The sun you can see out of the window is 8 minutes and 20 seconds old. The light from our nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is 4 years old.

Science

Yesterday Declan the scientist came to our school. He showed us some cool things: he rolled a can on the floor and it came back all the way back to him.

After we tried to guess what happened and nobody got it right.

Then he told us how he said there was a weight in the middle of the can and there was two elastic bands taped to the inside. The science behind it is when you rolled it the weight wants to stay in place and that winds the elastic bands up and when it stops the elastic bands lets out all the energy and makes it roll back words.

Then he came into our room and made a slingshot out of lollipop sticks. All of our class had a competition with 7 people v 7. The yellows went first then red and the yellows won. I was on the yellow team and the second round the reds won.

I enjoyed the day I hope Declan comes back again another day.

Yesterday we had a visitor come to our school.

His name was Declan. He is a scientist.

He comes to our school once every year to do some science and engineering with us.

The first experiment he did was the can that would that would always roll back to you.

The second one was the mirror that makes you look like you’re upside down.

My favourite experiment was the glasses that make you look purple.

After the show he came down to our classroom and made catapults with us.

That is my favourite part of him coming every year by far. I hope that he will come next year. He said before he left that he is hoping to make a phone that can turn into anything.

Yesterday we did science with Declan.

First he got a tin with a weight and elastic bands in it and anytime he rolled it it came back to him.

Then he got a can of diet coke and a container of water and he asked us ‘Will it float?’ and most people said ‘No’. Then we put it in and it floated! Then he got normal coke and asked if it would float and most people said yes and it floated! And then at last he had Pepsi and asked if it would float and most said yes and guess what, it didn’t! He asked why and lots of people had lots of ideas and then Ava said because there’s more sugar in Pepsi than Coke and it was right.

Declan from Science Ireland

The last day we had a man called Declan come to our school. Declan is a scientist. He did lots of things with us.

He usually tricked us to believing one thing when it actual something else is happening. He showed us that there is more sugar in a can of Coke than Pepsi and Coke floats and Pepsi doesn’t.

He also rolled a tin cylinder and it came back to him like a boomerang, but more slowly. The trick was he had a weight in the middle with elastic bands wrapped around it. The bands wind up when you roll the can and the can rolls bac kas the elastic bands unwind.

After that we had a game of homemade catapults. The way you make them is you need eight lollipop sticks and elastic bands. The rules are you get a Velcro ball and fling it with your catapult and try hit the target. It was really fun and can’t wait to do it next year.

Yesterday Declan the scientist came in to do science with us.

When he came all of the senior room went down to the junior room so we could do an expiriment together.

We did really fun things all together.

Then after our lunch break he came in to the senior room and we did catapults. They were really fun and I enjoyed them a lot.

The catapults were like a cross between the movie and game Angry Birds.

My favourite one was the robot one because he was really cool and it is a really smart robot. So I liked that a lot.

Declan was really good at science and was fun too.

Yesterday Declan the science guy came to our school he did some science  with us.

The first thing he did was he rolled a can on the ground and a it came back to him. He ask  us how did it come back? Some people kind of got it. After a while he told us the answer. It was how there was a weight in side of it with some rubber band tied around it.

Then he asked which would sink: a Diet Coke can, a regular can of Coke and  a PepsI. And he put the Diet Coke in to the water and it  didn’t sink. And then he put in  the Coke and that didn’t sink . Then he put in the Pepsi and that did sink because it has more sugar.

Then he stayed with the little ones for a while.

Then he came to us and played a fun game with us  you have a ball and shoot it on to  a little carped thing and it was fun.

Yesterday Declan Holmes, the science guy, came to our school. He showed us lots of stuff to do with science.

First he rolled this can and asked us what was happening. Then he showed us Coke. Diet Coke and Pepsi cans he asked us which would float and which would sink. Only the Pepsi can sank because the amount of sugar in it.

Half an hour later he came to our room and we played a extremely fun game with catapults. They were not real ones though, but we could make them ourselves at home if we wanted.

Afterward, we asked thousands of questions! He was really funny and I enjoyed the day a lot.

Science Fair (Step 5)

Today we had a science fair. We asked the parents to come in and watch us do our science experiments. Some of us went in groups of two. I went with Jack and our experiment was called an ‘Alka-Seltzer Explosion’.

All of are experiments went great.

The two best that I would pick is the Alka-Seltzer Explosion and the Volcano from Patrick and Laoise.

We had a good day then we had a surprise at the end of the day. The teacher made sure we all were in the classroom. And it was aaaaaaaa………robot made from Lego.

And that finished the day  with playing with the robots so are day was good.

Today we had a Science fair. I did the ‘Glow-in-the-dark-water’ to make the water glow. I got a glass of water. Then I snapped open a #

highlighter and inside there is a sponge filled with ink. I squeezed all the ink in to the water.

Then I held an ultraviolet light over the cup and the water glowed very eerily and you could see all the chemicals. It was amazing!

The end.

Today we had a lot of expirements going on in our classroom. We had so much fun doing them.

I was the fourth one to do our expirement. John and I did the Inflating balloon. We did it once but then it didn’t really work but then we did it a second time and it worked perfectly.

We worked really hard on this through the week and everybody worked hard aswell.
Science Fair was really fun. I really enjoyed it!

AG TÓGÁIL CRYSTALS (Step 1)

We had lots of fun building crystals recently. At first we examined the shape and texture of the Epsom salt crystals. We then added warm tap water to dilute the salt and also a little bit of food colouring. After leaving the solution in the fridge overnight, we noticed that the shape of the crystals had changed. They were no longer cubic. They had grown and had become smooth needle crystals. It was lots of fun!

image For science week my class did the dancing raisins experiment .First we got a cup of water. Then we put the raisins in the water and then we looked. They had sank. Then we got a cup of 7up. We put the raisins in . The raisins went up and down. This happened because the co2 was trying to escape .

We did a candle needs oxygen experiment. We got a candle. Then we lit the candle and we put a glass cup over the candle. The candle went out . Then we put the cup over the candle when the candle nearly went out we took it away quickly. The candle lit again because the oxygen was allowed in again.

We made lava lamps too. We got a bottle. Then we added water. Then we added oil. Then we add food colouring. Then we add Alkaselter tablets . This produced Co 2 which caused bubbles to rise up and down in the bottle. It was cool.

Leave no Trace (Step 1)

Today we learned about the ‘Leave No Trace’ programme at http://www.leavenotraceschools.org/  and how litter ruins the environment. We were working with a woman named Kirsten. We went into groups and made different animal shapes.

Then we went outside for a walk. We learned how long objects last before they biodegrade. A glass bottle will last forever and an apple core takes two months to biodegrade. I had a plastic cup and had to guess how long it would take to break down. Kirsten said that the cup would last for 250 years. It was really fun.

I enjoyed my time and I hope I could do it again. She gave us a pencil and a certificate. It was really fun.

Aurasma

Yesterday we did Aurasma. It is when you point your iPad, using the Aurasma app at a picture and it will play a video about it. This is an example:

It is fairly complicated. You have to upload the movie and login and and link it to a photo, which you have to upload too. It is really cool I would give it 10/10. This video is of me and John doing a presentation about the 1916 Easter rising on our Proclamation day but we just point to our photograph on the wall to see the video.

Lighthouses S3

On Friday I went to Grace’s (my cousin) for a sleep over but we had to make a light house.

Mom got us lots of sweets for the evening so we used them to make it. We used two Pringle boxes for the light house. The teacher gave us the light bulb and the battery. We got paper to put around the light house and then painted it.

We got a carboard box for the base and we painted that. We got blue stuff for the water and for top of the lighthouse we got a sweet jar.

On Wednesday we brought it in to school and everyone else had their lighthouses in too!

My lighthouse.

For my lighthouse I got a bottle then I put some paper on the bottle and painted the paper red and yellow .
Then I put the bottle on a sweet box then I put paper rocks on the box.
Then I put a paper door on the lighthouse .

After that I put the light on the lighthouse .
My mammy helped me with my lighthouse .

Yesterday I made my lighthouse.

I used a Club Orange 2-litre bottle, two A4 pieces of  white paper with a small piece cut off, black tape, red paint, a permanent black marker, Sellotape and electricity stuff from school. I used a battery ,a light bulb and a holder, 3 crocodile clips and a switch

First I cut a bit off the two sheets of paper and taped them onto the bottle and but the battery and the light inside. After I put two strips of black tape onto the paper, then I drew some windows and a door on and coloured the cap black. I put tape around the cap and put five strips of tape from the top to where the tape was to connect them together. I then cut two holes under the bottle so the cable could reach the light.

To finish it off, I painted a small bit red and tried it out. It worked
