🌲Ballycroy National Park🌲S1

IMG_1297Last Friday the whole school went to Ballycroy National Park to explore wildlife. Our instructors names where Bríd and Ciarán. First we did a slideshow. The slideshow showed us all the things that were in the National Park.🌲🌳

They then showed us two stuffed animals. One was a badger and the other was an otter. After that we went outside to do pond dipping. We caught a diver beetle. It was a rainy day. 💦💦

After that we went inside and we looked at some things that Bríd caught in the pond in the morning. There was lots of different types of bugs. My favourite one was the newt and the tadpole. In the end we all had a great day and we went back to the school.🐉🐸🏠

Last Friday the whole school went to Ballycroy National Park to explore wildlife and other creatures like amphibians.
We all met at school to get the bus at 10 o’ clock.

First when we got there we met our instructors Ciarán and Bríd. They brought us into the education room upstairs and Bríd showed us a slideshow about the National Park.

After we had our lunch Bríd showed us stuffed animals.
She then brought us out to the dipping pond. It was pouring rain. We caught a diver beetle, a frog, and an oarsman. Then we looked at animals that they caught in the morning. Liam and I got a frog and Bríd gave us a newt. I got to hold the newt. It was sticky when its feet walked on my hand.
It was a good day.

Science, science and more science! S3

Yesterday, 3rd of June, a man called Declan (from Science Ireland)came to our school to talk about science, technology and engineering!

Firstly, we all gathered in the junior room, at around 11 o’clock and he gave us stuff to do. We did motion pictures, and if you are blank about that, it’s where we got a piece of card, he put 2 holes on the two sides of it and elastic bands through them, tied them, and we drew a picture on one side and another on the other side (e.g a man falling off a cliff and on the other side he is landed in the water) and when you twist it around again and again with the elastics, it looks like a little one clip movie.

Then, we did paper areoplanes but not the typical ones, ones with straw and paper circles so when they flew (some went well some not) the wind would push through the circles making it fly. We also did other fun stuff!

He also told us about what was going to be invented in the future which caught all our attention. Every time he told us something new (e.g about a digital wallpaper which is already invented but costs the price of a house) we all were like “woahhhhh”

Over all, it turned out to be a great, interesting lesson! Everyone, including the teachers were astonished with all he told us about the future and how science works. I think the number of people wanting to be scientists or engineers, just got higher!

My school in Inver actually had a real scientist (yes you heard me correctly) in our school!! The scientist’s name was Declan. He made lots of cool art pieces with us,

(1) First we made ‘motion pictures’. On one side we drew a picture of something about to happen…and then flipped it over from the top. We had two elastic bands and we tied them onto the picture and twisted them at about 20km a hour. It moved as if it was a movie. Movies use the same technique as that but with 24 pictures a second!

The ‘motion pictures’ were my favourite although we did a moving woodpecker and a straw and paper aeroplane.

In our classroom Declan told us about the technological future. There is going to be a watch that cures cancer! And turns into a phone. A real tablet, And!!! When you throw it at a wall it turns into a 32inch TV. Ok.. I really want one! And hoverboards are in progress of being made right now!!! With copper wires in the footpath you can now fly!🚀🚀🚀🚀✈️✈️✈️✈️🐤🐤🐤🐦🐤🐦🐤

Today we were doing fun things with Declan who is a scientist.

We made things like motion cards, aeroplanes and wood peckers.

This is how you make the motion cards: first get a piece of cardboard put a hole each side then draw a picture on both sides and spin it around.

I recommend you have a day like today because Declan told us about the future.

Today a scientist/engineer called Declan came to our school.
First he showed us a piece of card with two drawings. He spun it round fast and then it looked like the drawings were one. Afterwards, we made our own ones. I made a pool table with a man.
Then we made hoop planes. It’s basically a straw with two hoops on it but mine and Mikey’s didn’t fly very well. After big break we made Woodpeckers. It was cool.
Then Declan came up to our room and told us about the future’s gadgets. It was a fun day.

Today a man called Declan came to our school to do some science with us. The first thing he did with us was with a piece of paper. He had a picture of a gold fish bowl ( but it looked a little like a horse shoe) on one side and on the back he had a picture of a fish. He attached two elastic bands. Then he started to spin it around. It looked like the fish was in the bowl. He then let all of us have a go. Mine was a picture of a girl happy and then sad.
The next thing he did with us was an aeroplane. It was made with two straws and to strips of card. You make one small shape and then a bigger shape. It was really cool and he let us make our own one too.
Our final thing was a wood pecker. It was basically that when you put a straw on an elastic band it vibrates. So when you have the wood pecker on it looks like like its pecking .
Finally he came into our class and told us about the future. The is going to be loads of new devices. I really hope that Declan comes again to tell us about other stuff.

Today, the 3rd of June 2015, a man called Declan came to our school to talk to us about science and engineering. This time last year he came too, and he was very interesting.

When he arrived in our school, our room, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class, went down to the small room so he could talk about science to us, as well as the younger students.

He started with talking to us about pictures and how years ago, in movies, that instead of a video they would take lots of pictures and put them together so that when you would watch the pictures, about 24 pictures per second, your brain thinks that it’s a video clip. Then after he finished talking to us about that, he showed us a demonstration of the moving pictures, but it was one he had drawn himself. On one side there was an empty goldfish bowl and on the other side of the paper there was a goldfish on its own. Also, on the two sides of the paper there were two holes punched and tied into both of them were two elastic bands, so he could flip the paper back and forth easily. When he explained to us about the piece of paper he started flipping the page back and forth really fast, and it made it look like the goldfish was inside the goldfish bowl! We were all amazed! Declan told us that the reason it looked like the goldfish was inside of the bowl was because when the picture is flipped back and forth, our brains trick us and instead of being able to think that the two pictures are separate, it makes it look like the two are the same. Then, Declan told us that we could have a go! We all tried to brainstorm an idea for our own drawings. In the end I decided to draw a radio with music notes around it. Once we were all finished we showed them to Declan and he really liked them all.

Then Declan went on to something different. He showed us how to make a small plane that was made out of two straws, paper and cellotape. We were all told to pick a younger student as our partner for making the plane. I picked Kayleigh. What you had to do was to get two straws and cut them a small bit and cellotape them together so they will be secure. Then you get your paper and cut it. Then, along with your partner, you can choose one, two, or even three shapes that you would like to use in your design and once you have them picked, you can fold the paper into those shapes and attach them to the straws with cellotape! Then you are ready to fly your plane! My and Kayleigh’s plane flew well, but it didn’t fly great, unfortunately. Once all of the plane excitement was over, it was time for break.

After break we went back into the small room again and this time we made a woodpecker out of paper, a small straw, cellotape and an elastic band. We were once again told to pick a younger student as a partner and I went with Kayleigh again. Together, we coloured in the woodpecker on a piece of paper and once we were done, I cut out the bird and it’s wings. Then we went up to Declan and got a small straw, an elastic band and some cellotape. Kayleigh and I cellotaped the straw to the middle of the paper bird. Then we cellotaped the bird together and threaded the broken elastic band through the straw. Kayleigh then pulled on the elastic band the bird was on and suddenly the bird started to climb down the elastic, and it made it look like it was pecking the elastic! It was really cool! After that, it was time to go up to our own classroom again.

After a little bit, Declan decided to come up to our classroom. He spoke to us about the future, and different types of gadgets that will or might be invented in the future. My favourite thing that he spoke about was electronic wallpaper. He said that it actually exists right now but it is very expensive. What happens is you cover a wall with wallpaper, like you would usually do, but here’s the twist, at the bottom of the wall, where the wallpaper ends, there is a wire. Using that wire you can change the wall paper to whatever you want!! You can even make the room a giant television!!!! Declan also said that in some aeroplanes they might start taking out the windows and replacing them with this wallpaper, so that they can still show the outside! Declan also spoke about a watch that can detect if there are any cancer cells in your arm! Just before he left, Declan wanted us girls to remember that science and engineering aren’t just boy’s subjects, girls can do them too.

I really enjoyed Declan’s visit to our school and I really liked the different things he did with us, like the moving pictures, the aeroplanes and the woodpeckers! I also thought that the talk he gave to us older students was really good and interesting! I think that science and engineering are really cool now but I’m not really sure if I would like to do anything like that when I grow up.

Presenting science work to everyone ( Step 5)

Recently, we had a science day. Both the Junior and Senior room did some experiments and presented them to on a another. It was a really fun.

In my group there was Ava, April, Orla, Lisa and I. Our experiment was an ‘Errupting Volcano.’ Some the other experiments were called ‘Foamy Fountain’ ‘Dancing Raisins’ and loads more!

When it was our turn we, introduced the act, introduced the ingredients, and then we asked a few questions. We added the vinegar to the volcano first, the the red food colouring and then we added the baking soda and the volcano erupted! It was like red lava! Everyone liked this experiment! The scientific message was that when Baking soda and Vinegar are mixed it causes a chemical reaction causing it to erupt like a volcano!

My favourite experiment was the optical illusion! This was Grace and Roisin’s experiment. I thought it was brilliant. You had to look at the board for 20 seconds and then look at Grace’s head, and it either shrunk or grew! Everyone laughed!

Also my favourite one from the Junior room was called ‘Lung capacity.’ They needed a volunteer and they picked me! So I went up top the experiment table and kneeled down. I had to blow into a straw and the water in the bottle was being forced out and however much was left would show how fit I was.

I enjoyed all of the experiments and I had a great day!

For the last few days we have been doing some science experiments. Yesterday we did them in front of the Junior class and some parents. There was so many great experiments. In my group was Ava, Orla, Ailish, April and myself. We were doing a volcano!

To make the volcano we used a bin bag and some play doh, and inside it we put a bottle. We filled the bottle up half way with vinegar and then put a cap of red food colouring in to make it look like lava. We then put 2 tea spoons of baking soda in and next thing it irrupted. All the junior class were amazed and really enjoyed it.

The reason why it exploded was because as the vinegar and the baking soda mix, it causes it to fizz, which made it burst up to the top of the bottle.

Yesterday we did science experiments. Grace and I did optical illusion with the students and the parents. When I said to look at the board for 20 seconds and when the time is up look at Graces head. Everyone was so shocked when they seen Graces head Got bigger. Then everyone’s eyes went funny and twisted. Sorry guys!!!!!😃😃😃😃😃😆😆😆😆.

Planting in our garden (Step 1: Living Things)

Last week we decided to plant some cabbage,onion and potatoes. The teacher picked 2 people every 10 minutes or so to go outside and dig up the soil.

After a few days when all the digging was done, we all went outside and began to plant the vegetables.

I was planting the cabbage. I made 3 rows with the soil and put the cabbage in the row.

I really enjoyed planting. I can’t wait until everything is grown 😊🌱

Twite bird trip to Portacloy (Step 5)

twite 2Today, the 29th of April 2015, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class all went on a trip to Portacloy. We went on the trip because over the past year and a half we have been learning about a near extinct Irish bird called the Twite thanks to two bird watchers called Derek O’ Loughlin and Susan O’Donaghue. We left to go to Portacloy around half past eleven or quarter to twelve. On our way there we picked up some classes from a local school, Glenamoy N.S.

Soon enough we arrived at the pier and cliffs in Portacloy. It was very cold and windy and every now and then it would make a rain shower but luckily we were all dressed for the weather and had warm coats and wellies on us. A little while later Susan and Derek arrived.

When they first came they started talking to us about the Twite and we found out some interesting things about the bird like how they only next in tall heather, how they eat small seeds from different plants like dandelion, sorrow (etc.) and how they never travel a long distance when trying to get food. Afterwards we were out into two groups. The first group went with Susan first and the second group went with Derek first. I was in the second group. Then the two groups went our separate ways.

We went with Derek over a small bridge to a place that had a river and lots of heather but before we looked at the river and the heather Derek asked Seamus to run up as far as he could with a blue rope and Roisín would hold the bottom of it. At school we had been doing a small project to do with the a Twite called a quatrat where we picked a certain spot behind our school that has lots of grass and plants and put a rope around it in a square shape. Then we would look very carefully at the inside of the square and look at what plants were inside of it and we would keep an account of it. This was something slightly simmilar and it was called a transcept. When the transcept rope was laid out Derek asked all of us to find a spot beside the rope and when we did that Derek found each of us a plant that we were standing beside. I had bracken. We then looked at the small river that was close to where we were and also looked at the surrounding moss and heather. Derek asked us why this would be a good place for a Twite to nest and we said it was a good place to nest because it had shelter from the water so that it would make it a bit harder for for other animals to get near the nest. We all walked over to where the others were with Susan and when we got to them our group went with Susan and the other group went with Derek.

When everyone was ready we walked up along with Susan so we could get a good view of the pier down below us. Susan then gave us all binoculars so we could see some of the birds which were on the sand. We spent a while looking through the binoculars and before we knew it, it was time to go! When we got on the bus we were all talking to the others from Glenamoy N.S when they had to soon get off because we had reached their school. When we reached our own school it was quarter to three and nearly home time! We all took off our wellies and changed back into our normal shoes and dug into some lunch since we were all so hungry from being out all day.

Overall it was a great day, despite the weather, and we have to thank Derek and Susan for bringing us on that very interesting trip to Portacloy to learn about the Twite. It was also great to meet up with the other children from Glenamoy and talk to them!

Toothpick and Jellytot structures #SciWk2014 (Step 3: Engineering)

On Tuesday, our classroom split up in groups to make our Jellytot and toothpick construction. In my group was me, Ailish and Amy. 💁
We started off by making 2-D triangles then we built it up and up and it fell a bit apart 🙈 but we managed to fix it using struts to strengthen the structure.
We tried out putting Ava’s huge rubber on it for 10 secs and it stayed on! 👀
When it came time to hold a bowl of 1 kilogram stuff, it slanted and fell! It stayed on for 8 seconds though! 😋
We were proud because who knew that anyone could make a structure using toothpicks and jelly tots?! 🙊

Lava lamps #SciWk2014 (Step 1 : Materials)

Today, the 14th of November 2014, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class made lava lamps. We started it off by being divided into two groups, the first group would fill their plastic bottles half full with water. The second group would do the same things as the first except instead of water they would fill the bottles with oil.Once that was done we got into our other groups, (the ones for making the lava lamps). Some of us weren’t in groups and some of us were. then the bottles that had oil in them put in water and the bottles that had water in them put oil in the bottles. The oil came to the top of the bottle and the water sank to the bottom.Then everyone put food colouring into the bottles. We had a choice of red, green and blue food colouring. I put in green food colouring. Afterwards some of us put in 1 an Alka Seltzer and let the lava lamps settle while we were out at break. After break the people who didn’t put in an Alka Seltzer put in two of them so they could see how it worked on their bottles. It’s very handy that when we didn’t have the Alka Seltzer we could just turn the bottle upside down and it worked the same way it just didn’t work for as long. It was really cool to see that we could make our own lava lamps with oil, water and food colouring instead of buying a lava lamp!

Tornado in a bottle #SciWk2014 (Step 1: Energy and Forces)

On Wednesday we did an experiment. The experiment was called “tornado in a bottle “.
First we got a plastic bottle,we filled 3/4 of the bottle up with water. We then added a small amount of black current to make the water into a light purple colour. Once we did that we put another bottle on top of the bottom bottle. We stuck that on with duct tape. Once we had secured the two bottles with duct tape we flipped the bottle over and shook it so the water looked like a tornado while moving into the other bottle. It was a great experiment and I really enjoyed it.

Germination #SciWk2014 (Step 1: Living Things)

On Monday we began an experiment with germinating peas. We all went in groups.  Abby and I were in a group.

First we got cardboard plates  and some tissue paper. Then we put the tissue on the plate. Then we each placed 8 peas on the tissue then we poured water on it. Our teacher put Ailish and Lisa’s under a web cam. The web camera takes photos every 15 minutes.  There is a pea that has a root comming out of it and the other has a crack in it. On Friday we watched a video of the peas germinating (see below). It was really cool.
