Uimhreacha priomha~ Prime numbers

Eratosthenses was a Greek mathematician who figured out that to find all the prime numbers between two and some large number, you need to remove all the multiples of each number between two and your large number. Start by pressing “2” (skip over “1”), and you’ll see all the multiples of two eliminated: 2,4,6,8, etc. Next, click on “3” and so on. At some point the program will stop, and all the prime numbers between 2 and 400 will be colored red. Can you guess the biggest number you will need to click?

Tóraíocht Ubh Chásca le Mata – Easter Egg Maths Hunt le Rosaleen agus Sophie

Easter Egg Maths Hunt!!!

Today we did an Easter egg maths hunt with Múinteoir Mairín and Múinteoir Lorraine. Our team was Róisín, Niall and myself. The hunt was all about maths but it was fun.

First you had to get 4 maths questions correct. Straight away we got a clue it said “Go to a place where you get your environmentally friendly water”, so then we thought about the water butt. We ran outside, around the school and to the water butt there we found 3 small Easter eggs, wrapped in crepe paper. We quickly put them in the bag and got back to work again.

In no time again we had the next 4 questions correct. The next clue was “Go to the thermometer that no longer tells the correct temperature”. So we went to the old thermometer on the window sill and there, at the back, were 3 small chocolate eggs!

The last 4 questions were left. They were harder than the rest but still we got them. The last clue was to get the map. So we got the map from Múinteoir Lorraine and there we set off to look for the last 3 eggs. In no time we found them behind a pipe. We had finished! We got 3 Easter eggs each and they were lovely and it was REALLY fun.😃

Today we did a Easter Hunt.We were in groups. In my group, there was Ailish, Grace and myself. First, we had to answer four maths questions and then we got a clue of where our Easter Egg was. My team was the pink team there was some hard questions in it but we got through it.

We answered the questions but then the teacher had to check them to see if they were right. If they were not right we would have to try again. Eventually we’d got our first clue. The clue was in a little plastic Egg. It was in the Red Tulip then we had todo another four questions to get another clue there was three Eggs

Then we had to estimate how long the distance from the front door to the gate was. Then we had to measure it. We got 9 metres. The next thing was we had to estimate was how much water would the bottle hold.We estimated 750 but the real mesurment was 800mls. We were very close.

We got our second clue. It was near the book shelf in the corridor. We looked through the book shelf and we found it wrapped in a purple wrapper. We had to get a map to get the final egg. On the map, there was a map of the school. the last clue was in the shelter on the table.

I really enjoyed the Easter Hunt and next year we might be doing another one with the younger children.

A visit from Nurse Evelyn

On Friday, Evelyn the community nurse came to our school.
She told us all about her job. She works as a midwife and a nurse. She goes to people’s houses if they are sick.
If they are sick, she takes their blood pressure, and checks their pulse. She took Kian’s blood pressure just to show us how to do it. We all took notes. And at the end we asked each other questions about it.
She brought in a syringe, it’s used for measuring blood. The syringe starts from 0ml to 20ml. You need to know maths and science for this job. It’s really important. It was really interesting learning about how she uses maths and science in her life.
She also brought in a stethoscope, she went around the class, checking our heart beat. It was really cool.
It was really cool having Evelyn in to our school. And was really interesting learning how she uses maths and science in her life.

The visit from our local nurse.

Today we had a visit from Evelyn our local nurse. She uses lots of maths and science in her work.
She showed us a syringe and it had ml on it.
She told us about hypothermia and if you get cold you might get it.
She told us our heart beats 72 times a minute.
When you have a pain in your throat sometimes the doctor takes a swab and sends it to the laboratory for investigation and they see what bacteria is causing it.
Evelyn uses a cuff to check blood pressure.
When a baby is born Evelyn has to weigh them to see if they are healthy or not.She uses the scales to weigh how many kilograms the baby is.
After 3 days Evelyn takes a little bit of blood from the baby’s heel.

Nurse Evelyn came to our school . She taught us about her job . She uses maths
and science. She uses cm to measure the size
of the baby’s head. She looks after old people, babies and mammies.
She has to check the weight of the baby. She uses scales for this.
Evelyn is very interesting.

Maths week – Junior Room

Maths Trail Junior Room on PhotoPeach

Last week was maths week. We did loads of fun things . On Monday we guessed how
many teddy bears were in the bucket. Ava won she guessed one hundred and ninety
nine . She was the nearest .On Tuesday we tried to think how much water was in the bottle
but the hard thing about it was the bottle was not full. So we had to guess less than half of the
bottle . It was very hard . But we soon found out that Amy and Kirsty won. We were very happy for
them. On Wednesday we guessed the weight of the book. The book was very heavy for its
size . Michael won. We were delighted for him we clapped and clapped. On Thursday we
guessed how long the string was. John Anthony won. He was amazed and very excited
to get his prize. Then on the following Monday we did a maths trail. The leaders were Miss
Reilly , Miss Garvin , Amy and Ailish. They were very helpful. Miss Garvin was my teams
leader. She timed us when we had to run around the school. Laoise was the fastest. It only
took her 19 seconds to run around the whole school ! !. Another fun task was when we had
to weigh how many beads was the same as a pack of cards. I loved maths week and I
hope we do it next year again. By Siobhan .
