Quadblogging

We are about to begin our Quadblogging project with three other schools, which are all based in the UK:
Horningsham Primary School at http://horningshamowls.wordpress.com
Humberstone Junior Academy at http://humboblog.primaryblogger.co.uk
and Bidston Avenue Primary School at http://kidblog.org/Miss_Taylor/.

As a group of four, each week, a different class will be the focus class allowing the other three classes to visit and comment on the focus class blog. Over a cycle of 4 weeks, each class has their week as the focus class. Each Quad gets to decide how many cycles are completed and when you have completed the cycles, you simply come back and register for a new Quad. More information available at http://www.quadblogging.com.

Listen to David Mitchell, the key designer of Quadblogging, speak about it:

Seachtain na Scoileanna Caitliceacha – Catholic Schools Week 2014

Roghnaíodh an téama An Scoil Chaitliceach: Lárionad Creidimh agus Foghlama don bhliain 2014 chun aird a dhíriú ar an bhfíoras go dtarlaíonn an t-oideachas i gcomhthéacs na mbunluachanna fiúntais. Ciallaíonn sé seo go gcaithfear luachanna fiúntais a mhúineadh, agus ní oideachas é bheith ag scaipeadh fíoras. I rith Sheachtain na Scoileanna Caitliceacha beidh féiniúlacht á chomóradh ag na scoileanna Caitliceacha.

Catholic Schools: Places of Faith and Learning was chosen as the theme for 2014 to highlight that all learning takes place in a values context. This means that all education involves an education in values; in other words, education is never simply about transmitting simple facts. During CSW, Catholic schools will celebrate their identity. Mad hair

Mad Hair Day

On Friday the 13 December, our school hade a Mad Hair Day to raise funds for the children in Philippines through the Children helping Children charity. We all brought in 50c.

For my mad hair day, I created a Christmas tree in my hair. I had to get a cone, hair spray, tinsel, battery lights and this realy stickie spray.
The first thing my mum did was to brush through my hair. Then she put the cone in the middle off my head and started to lift all my hair up. Then she sprayed it with sticky spray. She got the hair spray and sprayed all my hair. I used white spray because I could not find green spray. Then as my hair began to look like a Christmas tree, we decorated my hair. It looked so cool when it was finished.Everyone wore Mad Hair into school that day.

My teacher sent all our mad hair photos into Children helping Children.

Then a few weeks after my teacher got an email saying that I won the mad hair day competition out of all of Ireland. I WON €50. I was so happy! 🙂 My teacher presented me with my prize last Friday.

Our favourite articles in “The Primary Planet”

Tom Huddlestone

(Image from The Primary Planet, January 2014)

In this months ‘Primary Planet’ the article entitled ‘The end of the Huddlefro’ tells about Tom Huddlestone. He agreed not to cut his hair until he scored a goal in the Premier League. He didn’t cut his hair for two and a half years, until he scored against Fulham. He got his hair cut and raised nearly 50,000 for charity called Cancer Research. He plays for Hull City and when he was playing for them on Saturday last and his hair was really short! He had to wait for a week to get his hair cut because his barber was in London for the weekend. But he finally got it cut and he was happy to raise so much money for charity!

image52 Weeks 52 Jobs

(Image from ‘The Primary Planet’, January 2014)
In this months ‘Primary Planet’ there is an interesting article called ’52 weeks 52 jobs’.

In it we learned about an English man, Matt Frost, who decided to take on the challenge of changing a job every week!

He did this for 52 weeks. It’s amazing and the best  part is all of Matt’s wages went to charity.

It was a very tough task to do. He stuck to the different jobs without taking no time off work at all. I probably wouldn’t be able to get a job every week.

This was a great thing of him to do. I would love to try it and see how I’d do.

Nelson Mandela

Last week I read a very interesting article about Nelson Mandela in ‘The Primary Planet’. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th 1918. His first name was not in fact Nelson but Rolihlahla. He was given the name Nelson by a teacher because in those days all African children were given English names because they were easier for British colonials to pronounce. His father died when he was nine and he was taken in by the acting chief, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. Education was very important to Nelson Mandela and he attended Fort Hare University.

In 1956 Nelson Mandela and 155 others were arrested for treason. The trial for the case lasted over five years but Nelson Mandela was found “not guilty”. Nelson Mandela became the leader of a secret army called “Umkhonto” which fought against racism. In 1962 Nelson Mandela was accused of plotting to overthrow the government and he was sentenced to life in prison in 1964. Many people ordered that Nelson Mandela was released from prison and he was finally released from prison on 11th Febuary 1990.

Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and all black people were allowed to vote for the first time. He wrote a book called “A Long Walk To Freedom”. He won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Nelson Mandela retired from president in 1999. He was married three times and had six children but only three of them are still alive now. Nelson Mandela will be remembered as “Father of a Nation”. Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December 2013.

Our Green Code

Water Rap

Stop and think,
Turn off the sink,
You have the power,
Take a shorter shower,
Water’s fun for swimming or rowing with an oar,
Canoeing through the rapids but even more,
We need it to survive, to clean and to drink,
So don’t let it all just run down your sink,
Saving water is what we mostly do,
We turn off the taps and so should you,
We also save energy by turning off the light,
It saves electricity day and night,
We also recycle, all day long,
Rubbish in the bin, is where it belongs,
We’ll save our world, it’s a chance we can’t miss,
So future generations can enjoy all of this!

Let your 2014 get off to a Green start!

We are working hard in school to make a difference, but remember we need your backup too! Here is a reminder of a few simple tips you can implement at home to conserve water…
* Turn off the taps when washing your teeth – you can save 6 litres of water!
* Take a short shower instead of a bath.
* Fill the kettle with enough water for your needs – you can save energy as well!
* Always fix leaking taps.
* Use your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full (thus saving energy too!)
* Wash your fruit and vegetables in a basin of water instead of running water from the tap – then use the leftover water to give your plants a drink!
* Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
* Keep a jug of water in the fridge and enjoy a lovely cool glass whenever you want instead of letting the tap run.
Let’s be Waterwise together!
