Ag cur glasraí (Step 1)

An t-earrach atá anois agus tá an gáirdín réidh chun planadí a chur.

Inné chuaigh na daltaí ó ranganna Naí, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 agus 6 amach agus chuir siad plandaí cabáiste, oiniúin, gairleóg agus fataí. Bhí lián agus lamhaínní ag gach duine.

Chroch muid dhá óstán na bhfeithidí (bug hotel) chomh maith.

Dhóirt Siobhan uisce orthu nuair a bhí na plandaí curtha síos againn.
Tá súil againn go mbeidh an aimsir go breá ionas go bhfásfaidh ár plandaí.

Bhí na naíonáin ag seiceáil an raibh na plandaí ag fás ag am lón, ach tuigeann na daltaí ó na ranganna eile go mbeidh orainn foighid a bheith againn go fóill.

My favourite place in Ireland is my new house which is is being built at the moment.

I know it will make me safe. It is a big house and it has upstairs. It won’t be down a big road.

My brothers and I will sleep upstairs and my mom and dad will be downstairs. It will have a bridge crossing to my farm at the bottom of the field.

The view will be really really good. My room will be the warmest in the house because the chimney is coming up through the wall of my bedroom. There are four bedrooms in the house. There is a spare room downstairs beside my mom and dad’s room. We will be moving into the house in 7 to 8 months.

My new house will not be far from my school in Inver, Co. Mayo

My favourite place is my sitting room. A sitting room is a place where you have a television and comfy seats and sofas. My sitting room has two green single chairs and one long sofa with flowers on them and a television. This is my favourite place because it is very relaxing and cosy. My 2nd favourite place is my bedroom. My bedroom has has a big bed which I have to share with my sister. It has purple walls and blue curtains. My 3rd favourite place is my back garden where I can play with my dog Toby and my cat Fluffy . Me and my dog play lots of games like catch and football. Me and my cat play football too. They are my favourite places.

My favourite place is at a soccer pitch. I don’t mind what soccer pitch it is, it  just it give me a nice feeling.

Our nearest soccer pitch is in Bangor and I play for them. We came very close to winning the league. It is a good distance away from our school. It is a lovely pitch and it is in the west coast of Mayo. There’s a lovely river beside it. Bangor Hibs is the name of my team and it has an all weather pitch which means it’s very good in the rain.

My Favourite Place

A lot of people have a lot of different favourite places, many people chose football clubs, their houses, gardens and places they feel safe.
For me, theres only one place that I could possibly choose, of course…

I pondered over the idea of places I holidayed in, Dublin, Kerry and even Scotland!

Then I realised the place. The only place I could ever choose as my no1….

My place is located in a rural area. Its in front of the sea where you hear the crashing waves as a wake-up call every morning. Its surrounded by fields and neighbouring houses, sheep and (those 2 cute donkeys and a horse over the road)

The place I chose was my kitchen. In my kitchen I have a dining table in the middle and a tv with chairs in the corner.
The kitchen has a fireplace near the tv and a green marble (I think its marble !!) counter-top for cooking and baking.

My kitchen is a place in which christmases were spent with my family and friends, meals shared with the people I love and care about.

I remember Christmasses where we had meals at the table and a long spread of food Turkey, ham, rice, chicken along with many others which names do not come to mind .
I love my kitchen
This is my favourite place.

My favourite place is my school.

I think my school is a really nice school and that everyone is really nice.

The teachers are really nice and they are always there when you need them that’s why they are the nicest people. One of our teachers will be going for a little while because she is going to have a baby soon but will be back soon. Everyone will miss her when she goes.❤️

All the students in our school are really nice and funny. There are only 2 children in my class but there are a total of 35 in the whole school.

I live only up the road from our school so we don’t really have to go far. Right now we have four green flags. Green flags are awards we get so as to encourage us to care for the environment and to keep it clean. We are working on our fifth one. The flag we are working on is called Biodiversity. Green flags are every important. We always try to keep our school tidy and clean for everyone.

Our school is really nice and that’s why I wrote about it.😆✌️

My Favourite place
Hi my name is Ava. My favourite place is Ballina IMC cinema.
I like it because you can see lots of movies and eat lots of popcorn.
Last weekend I went to see Beauty and the Beast. They have really nice cosy seats there too. At the counter they sell all kind of sweets candy floss and popcorn and sweets and you can buy these before you go in.

My favourite place
My favourite place in Ireland is Croke Park in Dublin.
It is my favourite place because it is a stadium for every quarter final semi final and final.
The last time a final was played in it was 6th of October 2016 that was Mayo vs Dublin. It was a replay. the score in the first game was 2-16 2-16 and the second game was 2-17 2-18 to Dublin and the first time mayo should’ve won because one of the Mayo players were fowled right in front of the goal and mayo would’ve scored a point
and the lines man said to the ref don’t give Mayo a free because they will win it. The next time we go up we will be bringing Sam to the west💚❤️🏐

A local celebrity comes to visit!

Matthew Doocey came to our school on Wednesday. Matthew won an All Ireland trophy with Our Lady’s Secondary school. They won the trophy recently.

Matthew was in back for the team. The team won by 3 points.

The colour of the flag is yellow and red. Matthew has now won 2 All-Ireland trophiwa. The team has won this competition five times.

Matthew said the players they were up against were taller than them but his team worked hard and they won.

I got to hold the trophy and I got picture with Matthew with the whole school.

from Kyle’s Blog

On Wednesday Matthew Doocey recently popped in to the school to show us the trophy that Our Lady’s Secondary School in Belmullet won.

The trophy was won for Gaelic football and it was an All-Ireland trophy. The other team that they were playing against was Offaly.

Our Lady’s Secondary School won by 3 goals, I think.

Engineering Week (Step 3)

Engineers Week 2017 in school involved some thinking, talking and planning.

We had the Spaghetti Challenge and the construction of strong bridges. We also had some fun with VR and String as well as watching the live webcast on Friday.

Hello my name is Laoise and I am in Third Class. This week is engineering week. All the big class did challenges on bridges and tall towers. The teacher put us in groups of three. In my group was Ava Conroy and Jack McGuire.

Materials we needed :

double sided tape

20 pieces of spaghetti

a metre of string and 1 marshmallow

You had 18 mins to to construct and finish the tallest tower but you were not allowed to touch it when it was being measured. Our team won the challenge.

🛠Engineers’ Week.🛠
🔨Last week was engineers’ week.
When you think of an engineer most people automatically think cars, but really an engineer can be many things.🔨

🔨Engineers build planes and create new ways of travel. They build railways, and some of them even develop parts for humans and animals who need them for medical reasons.🔨

🔨On Tuesday we had a practice run of a competition in which We had to make a structure that could hold a marshmallow on top without falling.🔨

🔨The structures’ materials included a table length of tape, a table length of string and 20 sticks of (uncooked) spaghetti.🔨

🔨On the first day of doing the challenge the rules of materials could be broken so we got extra items.🔨

🔨The next day we had the main competition was on Friday     (that day it was very strict and we weren’t allowed any extras!!)🔨

🔨We also watched a video which was live from where engineering week was taking place. That broadcast was very interesting and in it there was a slideshow of all the great engineers of history which made most of the blueprints for our modern lives.🔨

This year’s Engineers week was very fun and I enjoyed it thoroughly.🛠

From Aoibhe’s Blog

Last week was Engineering week and we were learning about engineering. We learned about everything about engineering.

We did two challenges: one of them was to build a strong structure with spaghetti. The second one was to build a paper bridge that can holds five cent coins. The paper had to be more than 15cm.

When we built the spaghetti structure we needed 1metre of tape, 1 metre of string and 20 pieces of spaghetti.

Siobhán and Eve were on my team. We all had teams John, Patrick and Kirsty had one too.

We also watched a live webcast. I saw a person who worked as an electronic Engineer. I liked the Mechanical engineer because I like tractors. A Mechanical engineer makes lots of machinery and I like machinery. My dad as lots of machinery I help him with it.

The person who won the challenge was Patrick.

From Kyle’s Blog

This week was engineering week. We had a lot of fun building and creating things.

The first day we started everyone had teams of three. Everyone had to build “The tallest Tower made out of pasta”. We had to try and get a marshmallow at the top of the tower without it falling over.

But when we first did it it was only a practice run and then on Friday it was the real thing. Then when Friday came😬…… I didn’t win😭. Jacks team won but it was great fun🎉.
The next activity we did was “Paper Bridges”. We all got a A4 piece of paper to go home with.
So the rules were you could only use the paper nothing else and we had to fold it into the strongest shape. Every one did very well.

I really enjoyed Engineering Week and it was really fun.😄👍

Learning Circle Project 2017

In the senior room, we are doing a Learning Circles collaborative project through IEARN with students in schools all over the world.
These are our partner schools:

Learning Circles is a highly interactive, project-based partnership among a small number of schools located throughout the world. Registration is now open for the January to May 2017 session of iEARN Global Learning Circles.

Naomh Bríd

Saint Brigid

In the year 450 Saint Brigid was born in Fochart in Co.Louth. In her early years Saint Brigid used to watch and mind sheep and cows. She spent most of her life in Co. Kildare. When she was older she prayed to God so she would be ugly because she did not want to get married. She wanted to be a nun.
One day Saint Brigid was minding her dad’s sword when she saw a poor man. She felt sorry for him and gave him her dad’s priceless sword. Saint Brigid’s father was fuming and his face was scorching up.
A few years later she asked the King to build a convent. The King said no. Saint Brigid said she would take as much land as her cloak would cover. The King agreed and she put her cloak on the ground an it grew and grew. She had more than enough land for her convent. She made a convent and a school.

We celebrate Saint Brigid’s day on the 1 of February every year. She is our patron saint.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is running this week. We will be learning more about the Pope’s Encyclical Laudato Si’.

The theme for Catholic Schools Week this year is Catholic Schools: Learning with Pope Francis
to Care for Our Common Home.
It is hoped that this theme will help schools to gain an understanding of the Pope’s encyclical letter
Laudato Si’. This is Pope Francis’ second encyclical. Its title means ‘Praise be to you’ and it has the
subtitle On Care for Our Common Home.
The encyclical letter, published on 24 May 2015, discusses the harm humankind has caused on
earth and calls on ‘every person living on this planet’ to make necessary changes in our lives to
protect our planet.
Laudato Si’ deals with many environmental issues including pollution, climate change, drought, loss of biodiversity and the decline in the quality of human life.

Predicting what is going to happen next in ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’

The pupils in the senior room are currently reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. They have paused to predict what they think might happen next in the story:

I am reading Kensuke’s Kingdom. I have read about how the family are taking a boat trip around the world. Stella Artois the dog has just fallen overboard but has been rescued.
I predict the engine will break and they will have to paddle the boat to land and they will run out if money.
They will have to get a job in Australia until they have enough money. I think they will forget Stella Artois.
I think Michael is going to drop Eddie’s ball in the water and will be sad. I think a giant wave is going to hit the bow of the boat and they will have to swim back on it.

from Jack’s blog

I am reading Kensuke’s Kingdom. I have read about how the family are taking a boat trip.

I predict that one night the mom and dad go to bed and fall asleep and Michael and Stella Artois go up on the top of the boat when a big wave comes and washes them out to ocean.

Then I think that Michael and Stella Artois will fall out into the ocean when a big wave comes and washes then out to a island.

From Patrick’s Blog

I am reading Kensukes Kingdom. I have read about how the family are sailing around the world. Stella Artois has just fallen overboard but has been rescued.

I predict that they stop at another country and Michael gets lost but they only find out when they get back on the boat.

I’d say Stella goes and look for Michael and can’t find him until they see, him in a pub watching a game. Mum and Dad give out to him and put him on the boat and he slips getting on and falls into the water but luckily gets back up.
