Construction challenge (Step 3)

  1. Lots of fun was had as the children in the junior room worked in their teams to try to win the lollipop stick construction challenge. Each group had to build the tallest construction possible, that was stable enough to stand for at least 10 seconds using a maximum of 20 pegs and 20 lollipop sticks. There were wonderful ideas presented and great team work evident all round!

image For science week my class did the dancing raisins experiment .First we got a cup of water. Then we put the raisins in the water and then we looked. They had sank. Then we got a cup of 7up. We put the raisins in . The raisins went up and down. This happened because the co2 was trying to escape .

We did a candle needs oxygen experiment. We got a candle. Then we lit the candle and we put a glass cup over the candle. The candle went out . Then we put the cup over the candle when the candle nearly went out we took it away quickly. The candle lit again because the oxygen was allowed in again.

We made lava lamps too. We got a bottle. Then we added water. Then we added oil. Then we add food colouring. Then we add Alkaselter tablets . This produced Co 2 which caused bubbles to rise up and down in the bottle. It was cool.

Lighthouses S3

On Friday I went to Grace’s (my cousin) for a sleep over but we had to make a light house.

Mom got us lots of sweets for the evening so we used them to make it. We used two Pringle boxes for the light house. The teacher gave us the light bulb and the battery. We got paper to put around the light house and then painted it.

We got a carboard box for the base and we painted that. We got blue stuff for the water and for top of the lighthouse we got a sweet jar.

On Wednesday we brought it in to school and everyone else had their lighthouses in too!

Yesterday I made my lighthouse.

I used a Club Orange 2-litre bottle, two A4 pieces of  white paper with a small piece cut off, black tape, red paint, a permanent black marker, Sellotape and electricity stuff from school. I used a battery ,a light bulb and a holder, 3 crocodile clips and a switch

First I cut a bit off the two sheets of paper and taped them onto the bottle and but the battery and the light inside. After I put two strips of black tape onto the paper, then I drew some windows and a door on and coloured the cap black. I put tape around the cap and put five strips of tape from the top to where the tape was to connect them together. I then cut two holes under the bottle so the cable could reach the light.

To finish it off, I painted a small bit red and tried it out. It worked

Science Experiment S1 Living Things

Today we did science experiments in class. I did lung capacity. It shows how much air you have in your lungs. I was last in our class but I was going to be best.

First you fill up a 2 litre bottle and fill a basin up half way, put the bottle in upside down in the bottle get a straw put the bent part of the straw into the bottle, and blow into the bottle.

🌲Ballycroy National Park🌲S1

IMG_1297Last Friday the whole school went to Ballycroy National Park to explore wildlife. Our instructors names where Bríd and Ciarán. First we did a slideshow. The slideshow showed us all the things that were in the National Park.🌲🌳

They then showed us two stuffed animals. One was a badger and the other was an otter. After that we went outside to do pond dipping. We caught a diver beetle. It was a rainy day. 💦💦

After that we went inside and we looked at some things that Bríd caught in the pond in the morning. There was lots of different types of bugs. My favourite one was the newt and the tadpole. In the end we all had a great day and we went back to the school.🐉🐸🏠

Last Friday the whole school went to Ballycroy National Park to explore wildlife and other creatures like amphibians.
We all met at school to get the bus at 10 o’ clock.

First when we got there we met our instructors Ciarán and Bríd. They brought us into the education room upstairs and Bríd showed us a slideshow about the National Park.

After we had our lunch Bríd showed us stuffed animals.
She then brought us out to the dipping pond. It was pouring rain. We caught a diver beetle, a frog, and an oarsman. Then we looked at animals that they caught in the morning. Liam and I got a frog and Bríd gave us a newt. I got to hold the newt. It was sticky when its feet walked on my hand.
It was a good day.

Presenting science work to everyone ( Step 5)

image

Recently, we had a science day. Both the Junior and Senior room did some experiments and presented them to on a another. It was a really fun.

In my group there was Ava, April, Orla, Lisa and I. Our experiment was an ‘Errupting Volcano.’ Some the other experiments were called ‘Foamy Fountain’ ‘Dancing Raisins’ and loads more!

When it was our turn we, introduced the act, introduced the ingredients, and then we asked a few questions. We added the vinegar to the volcano first, the the red food colouring and then we added the baking soda and the volcano erupted! It was like red lava! Everyone liked this experiment! The scientific message was that when Baking soda and Vinegar are mixed it causes a chemical reaction causing it to erupt like a volcano!

My favourite experiment was the optical illusion! This was Grace and Roisin’s experiment. I thought it was brilliant. You had to look at the board for 20 seconds and then look at Grace’s head, and it either shrunk or grew! Everyone laughed!

Also my favourite one from the Junior room was called ‘Lung capacity.’ They needed a volunteer and they picked me! So I went up top the experiment table and kneeled down. I had to blow into a straw and the water in the bottle was being forced out and however much was left would show how fit I was.

I enjoyed all of the experiments and I had a great day!

For the last few days we have been doing some science experiments. Yesterday we did them in front of the Junior class and some parents. There was so many great experiments. In my group was Ava, Orla, Ailish, April and myself. We were doing a volcano!

To make the volcano we used a bin bag and some play doh, and inside it we put a bottle. We filled the bottle up half way with vinegar and then put a cap of red food colouring in to make it look like lava. We then put 2 tea spoons of baking soda in and next thing it irrupted. All the junior class were amazed and really enjoyed it.

The reason why it exploded was because as the vinegar and the baking soda mix, it causes it to fizz, which made it burst up to the top of the bottle.

Yesterday we did science experiments. Grace and I did optical illusion with the students and the parents. When I said to look at the board for 20 seconds and when the time is up look at Graces head. Everyone was so shocked when they seen Graces head Got bigger. Then everyone’s eyes went funny and twisted. Sorry guys!!!!!😃😃😃😃😃😆😆😆😆.

Planting in our garden (Step 1: Living Things)

Last week we decided to plant some cabbage, onion and potatoes. The teacher picked 2 people every 10 minutes or so to go outside and dig up the soil.

After a few days when all the digging was done, we all went outside and began to plant the vegetables.

I was planting the cabbage. I made 3 rows with the soil and put the cabbage in the row.

I really enjoyed planting. I can’t wait until everything is grown 😊🌱

Maths Trail (Step 4 Maths)

Last week all of the Senior Class did an outdoor/indoor Maths Trail.

We were split into groups of threes and fours. In my group there was myself, Siobhán and Rosaleen. We were Goup 2.

Everyone got a measuring tape and a sheet with pencils on it.

We (my group) started on Question 1, which said to measure the width of the front door.

Some of the questions were quite  easy: measuring from the front door to the gate, for example.

We had to estimate all of  the questions before we answered them for real.

Once we answered all the questions we ran to the teacher for her to correct it but we got one of the questions wrong so we corrected it and brought it back to the teacher.

We came second! Amy’s team cam first!

Mata – seomra na naíonáin

Bhíomar ag foghlaim faoina cruthanna 2-T agus 3-T le déanaí. Thog na páistí isteach cruthanna ón Bhaile. Rinneamar tacair de na cruthanna agus tacair de na cruthanna a rollann/nach rollann freisin, ag baint úsáid as rudaí sa seomra ranga agus rudaí ón Bhaile. Thóg na páistí a chruthanna féin. Bhí an-spórt againn.
