Today my classroom went to the beach.
We saw loads of creatures, peri winkles, crabs, mussel shells and limpets.
We saw something that looked like sea anemone too.
1st class and 2nd class took some pictures of some of the shells we found.
Some of the limpets were stuck on rocks and others were just lying on the sand.
We found mussel shells but the seagulls had eaten their meaty part.
When we were going home we traced our names in the sand.
We also saw some seagulls looking for prey..
I love going to the beach!!!!!

Our trip to the Fire station

On Thursday I went to the fire station . The fire mans name was Joe. He showed us the jaws of life and the fire engine. He put on all of his gear including the oxygen mask and tank. He turned on the beeper. It was very noisy. He showed us pictures of the factory fire. It lasted 4 days he told us. They had to use all the foam in Mayo Sligo and Roscommon.

The mysterious package: please help!

Today we received a very mysterious package in the post.

There were strange (but delicious!) sweets, maps of places in New Zealand and brochures about various aspects of tourism in New Zealand in the package… but no card; no letter or no hint about who sent it.

We don’t know who sent it but we do think it came from New Zealand, because of the postmark, the maps and the brochure. The only thing is…we don’t know anyone there!

Our clues seems to point to the South Island and an area named Haast or Taihaipe.

Look at our clues below and see if you can help us, please!

Our visit to Áras Inis Gluaire

A long time ago scientists put a special buoy in the ice in the North Pole to measure how deep the water is,how salty the water is and how cold the water is. Then it started to drift with the waves down the Atlantic Ocean. Then another iceberg slid over the top of it and it lost its signal for a long time. But then while it was sliding down with the waves It got its signal back again! The iceberg had melted! But then it lost the signal again as it went down the waves and then the waves brought the buoy to Blacksod Bay where a man called Fergus found it.He called someone to come check it out. The man told him it was a buoy that came from the North Pole. He told the civic center and then decided to display it so that people could come and visit it! Our school went to visit it. It was so cool ! It was yellow. The buoy must have met LOADS of mammals along the way, dolphins, polar bears, penguins, seals and maybe even whales! We could not lift the bouy! It was so heavy! Quadblogging

We are about to begin our Quadblogging project with three other schools, which are all based in the UK:
Horningsham Primary School at http://horningshamowls.wordpress.com
Humberstone Junior Academy at http://humboblog.primaryblogger.co.uk
and Bidston Avenue Primary School at http://kidblog.org/Miss_Taylor/.

As a group of four, each week, a different class will be the focus class allowing the other three classes to visit and comment on the focus class blog. Over a cycle of 4 weeks, each class has their week as the focus class. Each Quad gets to decide how many cycles are completed and when you have completed the cycles, you simply come back and register for a new Quad. More information available at http://www.quadblogging.com.

Listen to David Mitchell, the key designer of Quadblogging, speak about it:

Our Green Code

Water Rap

Stop and think,
Turn off the sink,
You have the power,
Take a shorter shower,
Water’s fun for swimming or rowing with an oar,
Canoeing through the rapids but even more,
We need it to survive, to clean and to drink,
So don’t let it all just run down your sink,
Saving water is what we mostly do,
We turn off the taps and so should you,
We also save energy by turning off the light,
It saves electricity day and night,
We also recycle, all day long,
Rubbish in the bin, is where it belongs,
We’ll save our world, it’s a chance we can’t miss,
So future generations can enjoy all of this!

Composed by Amy and Alison

Let your 2014 get off to a Green start!

We are working hard in school to make a difference, but remember we need your backup too! Here is a reminder of a few simple tips you can implement at home to conserve water…
* Turn off the taps when washing your teeth – you can save 6 litres of water!
* Take a short shower instead of a bath.
* Fill the kettle with enough water for your needs – you can save energy as well!
* Always fix leaking taps.
* Use your dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full (thus saving energy too!)
* Wash your fruit and vegetables in a basin of water instead of running water from the tap – then use the leftover water to give your plants a drink!
* Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.
* Keep a jug of water in the fridge and enjoy a lovely cool glass whenever you want instead of letting the tap run.
Let’s be Waterwise together!

Our day of Action – Visit to Local Water Treatment Plant

Yesterday we went to the Erris regional water Supply scheme where the Carramore lake is. We found out lots of things. They drain all the bugs, sand and dirt from the water so it is ok to drink. We found out that there is 5000 Acres of water in Carramore lake. We saw the 4 tanks that clean out the water. The 1st tank is for the raw water. That is straight from the lake. The 2nd tank is for the chemicals. The water floats to the top and the dirty lake water sinks to the bottom. The 3rd tank is for the clear water. The 4th tank is for checking the water is ok for drinking. We loved learning about what happens to water before we drink it.
Our school got pencil and badges. Lots of work goes on before water flows from our taps. We must all try to save water!

The Twite

The Twite in Inver National School

The Twite

On Thursday last week a man called Derek McLoughlin came to our school to talk to us about a bird called “The Twite”. The Twite is a very small bird that nests in heather.

Derek told us about the Twite and about its habitat. It feeds on small seeds from flowers and plants. The Twite is a lot like other birds so you might get easily mixed up.

Derek showed us a clip about the Twite. It showed us that the Twite only lives in the coast of Mayo and Donegal.

At the very end of the day Derek put down some seeds in our garden so the Twite will come to our school some-time later this year.

I was very interested in learning more about the Twite. It was a great day.

Derek Mc Loughlin

On Thursday last the 13th of June Derek Mc Loughlin came to our school to talk about the Twite bird. A few pupils from Glenamoy National School came as well to watch.

First he showed us a PowerPoint on the Twites. It was really interesting. He showed us the difference between the Linet, the Red Pole and the Twite. It was really good.

After that he brought us outside to plant some seeds for the Twite to come and feed on it. Then we went to look at the different type of flowers.

Then we watched a short clip on the Twites . I really enjoyed the day and learned a lot.

Last Thursday a man called Derek McLoughlin came to our school to talk about a bird called a ‘Twite’.

Glenamoy school came too because they were learning about the Twite too like us.We learned many new things about the Twite. We learned what seeds it eats, where it makes its nests and how many breeding pairs there are in Ireland.

First when he came into the classroom he showed us a slideshow on the whiteboard . He named out many different types of birds like the Red Pole, the Linnet and the Twite. We then had a game of spot the difference between the different birds.

After that we went outside down to the garden where we plant all the seeds. He had these special seeds that he sprinkled on the soil and then covered them over with soil. There the seeds that the Twite will eat. I hope.

We then walked down to the back gate in the field to look for different flowers. I saw different flowers that I’ve never seen before or even heard of. After we saw all the different flowers we walked back into the classroom to go back over all the stuff we had seen.

I really enjoyed learning and listening to Derek today because now I know more stuff about the Twite then I did before. I hope he comes back again next year.

Last Thursday Derek Mcloughlin the ornithologist came to our school to tell us about the ‘Twite’.

We had a tiny bit known already but he taught us a lot more. First he showed us a slide show. It was really interesting.

Glenamoy school came as well because they are planting seeds to. But they are doing it themselves, Derek did it for us.

He showed us different sorts of birds. They were called the Red Pole and the Finch. The Red Pole is called that because his forehead has a red patch on his head.

He then brought us outside. We all watched him plant the seed for the Twite.

We went around the playing field looking for plants that other birds feed on. We had to go inside at two o’ clock because the younger students had to go home.

We watched a video clip when we went inside. It was really interesting.

I really enjoyed learning about the Twite and I hope I see them in our garden in a few months.

Our Visit from Laura

We had lots of fun with Laura from An Taisce. We did a little puppet show and we learned why it is important to keep our rivers and oceans clean. We are trying really hard to keep our school nice and tidy too.
