⭐⭐February in the Junior Room⭐⭐

We had an action packed month in the Junior Room.  We learned all about Saint Bridget and made fabulous crosses from paper.  In P.E the children continued to work on the strand of Dance.  We are having great fun learning different dances.

In Maths, the children continued to work on number formation, counting, addition and subtraction.  All classes also worked on Money.

In Art, as mentioned above, the children made Saint Bridget crosses, Valentine’s hearts and cards and beautiful butterflies.

We learned how to make music from various items in the classroom, such as our copies, pencils, lunch boxes and drink bottles.

Our topic this month in Aistear was The Dentist.  We learned all about the dentist, healthy eating and drinking and taking care of our teeth.

We continued with Literacy and Numeracy stations this month.  The children worked on their phonics, reading, writing and answering questions about a piece of text.  In Numeracy, using a number line and 100 square, Mathematical games, money, mental maths and colouring by number activities were completed.

We continued working on the Incredible Edibles programme this month.  We learned about the Bord Bia mark and what this symbol means.  We also leaned about the fruit and vegetables that can be grown in Ireland.

As part of our Well-being programme, we worked on the topic of gratitude and completed some lovely activities such as our gratitude jars.

Today, we had great fun taking part in a Kahoot quiz as Gaeilge and we completed the topic of Éadaí.

I hope you all have a lovely midterm break.  See you all on Monday.

🌟Middle Room🌟- 💌February💓

Where has the time gone?  Have a look at our past few weeks.

This month we were learning about An tEarrach as Gaeilge, na míonna, na laethanta agus ainmfhocail (noun recognition) in our léamh. We are all the time continuing to work on our independent scríobh Gaeilge, in which there is a steady improvement. In English, the children continue to practise steady paced reading with expression and summarising what they have read. They also chose their favourite poem/dán to date and wrote it in their best writing. They did a great job. We have this work proudly displayed in the school corridor. We are using our poems to identify different grammar focuses. This month we identified contractions and expanded them to original form . We also  identified homophones  and revised verbs, nouns and synonyms. We are all enjoying our class novel Under the Hawthorn Tree which reminds us of our history and the courage and determination Irish people had to have in order to survive such harrowing times.

In Maths our focus has been Time ⏲⏳. Some of us are focusing on telling the time in 1/2, 1/4 hrs and others using exact minute. We are all practising converting analogue times to digital both on a 12hr and 24 hr clock. It is very easy to reinforce this learning at home using home clock and converting time shown. We will continue this after midterm too. We also worked on place value  Tens and Units and Hundreds/Tens/Units. We continue to work on tables which must be practised at home on a regular basis in order for them to become automatic. Doing this means your child will be able to focus on learning the new methodologies the will encounter without the worry of not knowing their tables. See link on blog https://sninbhear.edublogs.org/why-is-learning-tables-important/explaining why tables are just as important as reading and how you can help your child.

In Geography our focus was caring for the environment, History was based on the legend of Setanta 🏑🐺 and Science was based on the incredible edibles task. We also continued our tasks in the incredible edibles programme and the children worked in groups and each had a specific focus eg from farm to fork with specific foods and exploring processed /unprocessed foods. Children developed their IT skills throughout, learning how to search and copy and paste images into word documents.  Our wellbeing focus was Gratitude 🙏and we all have so much to be grateful for. Children completed some lovely gratitude trees following a brainstorming session in class.

You have all encountered the paper mache heads at this stage.🎭 They took a lot longer than anticipated but we live and learn (sometimes the hard and sticky way 🤣🤣)but alas we finally completed them. They ranged from personal representations to cartoon characters to Ed Sheeran. The children did a wonderful job and it reminded me very much of Julia Donaldson’s story A squash and a Squeeze when the children brought them home. The room felt very spacious indeed! P.E . this month we practised games, specifically Rounders, which the children really got into.  Our FMS was throwing (underarm ), catching (cupped hands) and of course striking (using correct stance). Great fun was had and some impressive catching of the ball before it bounced and a home run or two. We continue with regular exercise breaks in class and only recently tried out some drumming cardio which is also beneficial in developing rhythm/beat/pulse and good fun!

Our fun day for Jason’s fundraiser was very much the highlight of the month. The day comprised of show and tell (and playing) with children’s choice of toy, some classroom challenges which were great fun – Squat challenge, Tights challenge, Plank Challenge, Sausages & Soldiers and Foosball and Pinpong mini games just for fun. We had disco music at break and a jig or 2 also.  We enjoyed a part movie and treats organised by the student council… Thank you guys👌👍. A wonderful day for a wonderful friend💙.

Have a lovely midterm,

⭐⭐Junior Room-January 2022⭐⭐

We had a very busy and exciting month settling back in after the Christmas holidays.

In Irish, we learned all about An Aimsir.  Cén sort aimsir atá ann? An bhfuil sé ag cur sneachta? An bhfuil sé tirim? An bhful sé gaofar? An bhfuil sé fliuch?  The children took part in a Trath na gCeist at the end of the month.  We had great fun completing the Kahoot and are looking forward to next month’s quiz.

As part of our Well-being programme we concentrated on the theme of Friendship.  We learned about what a friendship is and how we can all be a good friend.

✨✨Middle Room ✨✨January 10th – 28th

Over the past month we have been settling back into the busyness of classroom life. This month we worked on addition (2nd) and Division /Multiplication (3rd). We also worked on the topic of Money whole class so any opportunities children have to work with coins in the ‘real’ world would be beneficial. Children also explored other Maths topics during our Maths games time.

In reading, our focus was pace and expression and the children have been working so hard on this and have come on so much 👏👏📗. We also worked on synonyms, antonyms and homophones. The children have also been working on developing their cursive writing. They are doing so well. Samples are available to view in their personal seesaw folder. This is what your child is capable of and this is the expectation your child should have each time they write – giving your best effort each time. Well done!

Our wellbeing topic this month was Friendship . Following a discussion on the video, children worked in groups then contributed their ideas as to what qualities makes a good friend. ‘Layers’ was the magic word in Art. We have nearly completed our paper mache heads!! In Gaeilge, we are learning when to use the ‘h’ and ‘urú’ and prepositions – ar an, ag an, in aice leis an, faoin , os comhair.  We are also continuously practising replying to various ceisteanna..An ndeachaigh? Chuaigh/Ni dheachaigh, Ar chuir?- Chuir/Níor chuir , Ar chuala – Chuala/Nior chuala and so on and also correct sentence structure in our written work. We are beginning to realise that Tá isn’t the answer to everything..Maith sibhse!

In Geography we are learning about Provinces and counties in Ireland and we learned a little bit about the Tour de France and Stephen Roche in History. In Science children are exploring the origin of foods and the difference between processed and unprocessed foods. This is tied in with our Incredible Edibles initiative. We also celebrated Catholic school’s week this past week.

We had a Tráth na Gceist (Quiz through Irish) which we will do at the end of each month to promote Gaeilge through fun.

Keep up the reading at home everyone👍.

⭐⭐Junior Room 05th-22nd December⭐⭐

We had a  busy number of weeks in the Junior Room, preparing for Christmas.  We decorated our Christmas Tree in the classroom, made decorations for this tree and the school tree, created fabulous pieces of Art based on the theme of winter/Christmas.  We really enjoyed making the large snowman and Santa and taking part in the walk on Friday last.  We also went to visit the crib in the church.  We were really excited about our hot chocolate and cookies in the afternoon.  It was really yummy!

The boys and girls were really busy in Santa’s workshop, checking and wrapping the toys, writing Santa letters, constructing new toys and playing in the small world area.  Bing has been busy too, moving around our classroom keeping an eye on everything.

We worked on the theme of An Nollaig as Gaeilge and continued to work on the Fyffes programme.  Great fun was had while taking part in the Kahoot Christmas quiz and we all loved learning about the birth of the baby Jesus in Religion.

We are looking forward to Santa arriving very soon and having a lovely Christmas holiday.

⭐⭐Junior Room-29th November-03rd December 2021⭐⭐

We had a great week in the Junior Room.  We are continuing to work on capital letters, full stops and recount writing.  During Literacy Stations, the children are working on dictation, phonics, phonological awareness and reading.  We are learning all about the different Caitheamh Aimsire as Gaeilge.

In Maths we are working on the topic of spacial awareness as well as the numbers 1-7.

We are continuing to work on Athletics in P.E.

The children created fabulous winter tree and snow globes in Art and we began making decorations for the Christmas tree.

The theme for our play for this month is ‘Santa’s Workshop.’  The children have been very busy writing letters to Santa, wrapping and labelling presents, completing quality checks on the gifts and creating their own toys.

We had a very special delivery this week……our elf ‘Bing’ arrived in our classroom on Wednesday afternoon.  We are all looking forward to seeing what ‘Bing’ will get up to over the next few weeks.

Middle Room✨✨ Nov 15th-Dec 3rd ✨✨

Here is snippet from the past 3 weeks in the middle room.

We have been learning about Alexander Graham Bell and phones in History. We have started to move onto Explanation writing (oral at first) and we learned/explained  Why it rains? (The water Cycle) in Geography. Everyone is working hard on written presentation and there is a huge improvement all round. I hope all the boys and girls are proud of themselves👌

The children enjoyed the strand of Drawing and their Still life fruit bowls are so unique and beautiful. This week the children made and decorated a little clay decoration for the crann nollaig sa halla.

We have finished our topic Bia and have practised phrases such as ‘ Tá___uaim.’  – ‘I need a ___’

Is breá liom  ____   – I love ___    ‘Is fuath liom ___ ‘    ‘I really dislike ____’

An ndearna tú—?   Did you do? /Did you make?

Ar ith tú?  Did you eat ..?     D’ith /Níor ith mé  as well as plenty of reading in the Aimsir Chaite (past tense ) and Aimsir Laithreach (present tense)

We have moved onto Caitheamh Aimsire (pastimes). We will practise phrases such as

‘Ba mhaith liom bheith ag_____’ –  I like to _____

An féidir leat ___? Can you __? Is/ní féidir liom. We also work on gramadach (grammar) each week as well as plenty of reading from our chart in class and our new books.

In Maths we were learning about lines of Symmetry in Nature, Architecture and Objects. We are all the time working on our number skills, with a particular focus on the hundred square, number patterns, multiplication, odd and even numbers and addition and subtraction problems. (tens and units  & HTU )

In Drama our focus has been mime and thought tracking . It is lots of fun. We will continue this in the next fortnight also.

In SPHE and as part of the Wellbeing Fun Friends programme, children have been focusing on Red thoughts and Green thoughts. While Red thoughts are perfectly normal and ok to have, they are unhelpful.

Red thoughts STOP us having fun, STOP us giving things a go and STOP us feeling great. Green thoughts  help us keep going, try new things and feel better.

In our Monday lessons and with the in class support of Múinteoir Lorraine, we practice changing Red thoughts to Green (helpful) thoughts. Examples   Red = I can’t do this.    Green = I can keep trying/ With time I will get better/ I can give my best effort.    We are trying to encourage children to be the BOSS of their thoughts and feelings and behaviours. We remind them to Choose GREEN ! The more they practise (and ourselves too☺)the better we become at it. It would be so beneficial for families to use the same language at home to reinforce the concept.

Keep up the great work with the reading in both Irish and English at home.

⭐⭐Junior Room in November⭐⭐

We had a great month in the Junior Room.  The children are working on the strand of Athletics in P.E.  We are continuing to take part in the Fyffes challenge and we are really enjoying it.  The children are working really well on recount writing.  We are also continuing to work on capital letters and full stops.  We are continuing to work on the SALT programme and really enjoyed acting out various scenes from the different stories.
