Toothpick and Jellytot structures #SciWk2014 (Step 3: Engineering)

On Tuesday, our classroom split up in groups to make our Jellytot and toothpick construction. In my group was me, Ailish and Amy. 💁
We started off by making 2-D triangles then we built it up and up and it fell a bit apart 🙈 but we managed to fix it using struts to strengthen the structure.
We tried out putting Ava’s huge rubber on it for 10 secs and it stayed on! 👀
When it came time to hold a bowl of 1 kilogram stuff, it slanted and fell! It stayed on for 8 seconds though! 😋
We were proud because who knew that anyone could make a structure using toothpicks and jelly tots?! 🙊

Lava lamps #SciWk2014 (Step 1 : Materials)

Today, the 14th of November 2014, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class made lava lamps. We started it off by being divided into two groups, the first group would fill their plastic bottles half full with water. The second group would do the same things as the first except instead of water they would fill the bottles with oil.Once that was done we got into our other groups, (the ones for making the lava lamps). Some of us weren’t in groups and some of us were. then the bottles that had oil in them put in water and the bottles that had water in them put oil in the bottles. The oil came to the top of the bottle and the water sank to the bottom. Then everyone put food colouring into the bottles. We had a choice of red, green and blue food colouring. I put in green food colouring. Afterwards some of us put in 1 an Alka Seltzer and let the lava lamps settle while we were out at break. After break the people who didn’t put in an Alka Seltzer put in two of them so they could see how it worked on their bottles. It’s very handy that when we didn’t have the Alka Seltzer we could just turn the bottle upside down and it worked the same way it just didn’t work for as long. It was really cool to see that we could make our own lava lamps with oil, water and food colouring instead of buying a lava lamp!

Tornado in a bottle #SciWk2014 (Step 1: Energy and Forces)

On Wednesday we did an experiment. The experiment was called “tornado in a bottle “.
First we got a plastic bottle,we filled 3/4 of the bottle up with water. We then added a small amount of black current to make the water into a light purple colour. Once we did that we put another bottle on top of the bottom bottle. We stuck that on with duct tape. Once we had secured the two bottles with duct tape we flipped the bottle over and shook it so the water looked like a tornado while moving into the other bottle. It was a great experiment and I really enjoyed it.

Germination #SciWk2014 (Step 1: Living Things)

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 21.05.56

On Monday we began an experiment with germinating peas. We all went in groups.  Abby and I were in a group.

First we got cardboard plates  and some tissue paper. Then we put the tissue on the plate. Then we each placed 8 peas on the tissue then we poured water on it. Our teacher put Ailish and Lisa’s under a web cam. The web camera takes photos every 15 minutes.  There is a pea that has a root comming out of it and the other has a crack in it. On Friday we watched a video of the peas germinating (see below). It was really cool.

Clockwise or anti-clockwise? #SciWk2014 Update

This week was “Science Week!” We did lots of different experiments. This is about “Which way the water runs!”
We were split into groups, I was with Lisa. We had the sink in the office! We filled it up about 1/2 the way of the sink! I went around and sprinkled some glitter in each sink to make it more visible!
Then we left the water to settle for 10 mins. Lisa pulled the plug and I videoed. All the water in Inver N.S goes clockwise! I enjoyed this experiment!!! đŸ˜đŸ˜˜đŸ˜±

Remember how we said last week we’d try to find out which direction water left sinks? Well this is what we found:
In our school, the water came out in a clockwise direction from all our sinks, except one, where the plug was faulty and the water had leaked out before we could check it.

Thank you to everyone who replied to us!

This is what we found from other schools:

Science Week Fun!

The children had so much fun trying out different experiments this week for Science Week. We explored and learned about air pressure, surface tension, electric charge and floating and sinking. The children were amazed by some of the results and were so interested in the science behind it. Here are some photos of our experiments.

Clockwise or anti-clockwise? #SciWk 2014 Step 2

For Science Week, we’ve been trying to decide whether water goes out of our plughole in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. We put some glitter into our sinks and wash-hand basins and checked them all this morning. We allowed the water to stand for 10 minutes and then pulled the plug. The water came out in a clockwise direction from all our sinks, except one, where the plug was faulty and the water had leaked out before we could check it.

What have you found in your school?

Scary Halloween Story by Amy

happy_halloween_lina_gif_by_liberorexis-d4cd509
“Trick or treat!” Shouted Ellie, Alison and Sarah. It was Halloween night and all the children ages two to twelve years of age were out in costumes hunting for sweets. Ellie was dressed up as a zombie, Alison was dressed up as a vampire and Sarah was dressed up as a werewolf. “Oh how scary you girls look tonight!” Said Mrs.Smith, an elderly lady who lived close by. “Have you collected many sweets yet?”. “Not yet” Replied Alison. ” But we’re working on it, this is only our first house!”. “Oh dear, we’ll you girls better get on with it! A handful of sweets for the zombie, a handful of sweets for the vampire and last but certainly not least a handful of sweets for the werewolf too!”. “Thank you!!” Shouted all three girls at once as they skipped off happily to the next house. Suddenly the bright full moon came out from behind the clouds. Sarah stopped to stare at the bright moon. Once Alison and Ellie realised that she had stopped they ran back to get her. “Why did you stop Sarah” asked Ellie. “Is something wrong?”. ” No, but, guys! Look at the full moon!”. “We’re looking at it! It’s just the same full moon that there is every other night” snapped Alison angrily. “No! It’s not! There’s something strange and magical about it! It’s really spooky!” protested Sarah. ” It’ s a bit strange I guess but come on! All the sweets will be gone soon and we’ve barley started!” Exclaimed Ellie, and so the three girls walked off to the next house but before they got too far Sarah took a backwards glance to make sure everything would be alright. Everything looked to be ok but there was something in the air that made Sarah doubt herself
..

Once the girls had done all the neighbourhood and were just about to turn around the stopped to take a break. “Uhhh! These fake fangs are so sore! I have to take them out!” Cried Alison. She tugged at her fangs to get them out but the wouldn’t come out! They were her actual teeth! ” OWWWWW!” Cried Alison. ” They aren’t coming off!”. Sarah felt her hairband which was decorated to look like a werewolf’s ears. It wasn’t a hair and anymore, they were her actual ears!! A frightened Ellie used the bottom of her t-shirt to wipe her facepaint off, but like the other girls, it wasn’t coming off! “AHHHHHHH!!”screamed all the girls. “WE’RE TURNING INTO MONSTERRSS!!!”. “I bet this has something to do with the full moon! I told you something was strange!” Shouted Sarah. “Well its your fault that we all turned into monsters! We would have never looked at the full moon if you hadn’t made us look!” Roared Alison. “Guys! Stop fighting! I think it would be better to find a cure than to waste our time fighting! Who’s with me?!” Cried Ellie. “I guess we are” shrugged Sarah and Alison to each other.

“Now what do we do first!?” Questioned Alison. “I have no idea!” Answered Ellie. “How about we head to my house and think of a plan?” Wondered Sarah. “My parents aren’t at home”. “OK” agreed Ellie and Alison as they began to walk down the streets. Suddenly the ground started to shake. The girls could tell it was the troublemakers that are out every Halloween night egging houses and making a mess of the place. Ellie looked at her watch. It said 2am on it. It was dangerous to be out at this time of night, even for three eleven year old girls. The girls ran into an alley-way which was the worst thing that they could have done! Six teenagers began to crowd up on them! All they could do was scream! Sarah even began to howl like a werewolf! The place began to blur for Sarah! She thought she was going to die!!

All of a sudden Sarah woke up! She was in her bedroom safe and sound! Sarah picked up her phone on her table to check the date and time. It said October 31st, 9:30am! Sarah began to cry because she was happy and sad. Happy because she and her friends were safe but she was sad because she left a sack full of sweets behind in her dream!!!

The End!
