Cycle safety with Gerry Butler

cycling

Every Thursday, for the last three Thursdays, a man called Gerry visited our school for a cycle safety lesson with the junior room and senior room. We each have to bring in a bike and helmet but he does supply spare bikes and helmets if some of us don’t have any.

Firstly we did an obstacle course, in which we had to go through cones and on a type of seesaw. The purpose of the exercise was to keep straight and brake when you need to.

Then we played a game where he puts cones in the shape of a circle and we all cycle inside the cones, but, to make it harder, each minute, Gerry puts the cones in closer and closer until there is a tiny circle and it’s hard to go round and round. The purpose of that activity is to keep balance.

Afterwards, we played a game where there is a few of us down at the bottom of the pitch and a few at the top and then there are two cones in the middle which we have to go through, but, we go in lines and have to wait for the person on the other side to go through before you so it goes in a pattern. You cannot put your foot on the ground or else you’re out. Most people go slowly so the person behind is struggling to keep their foot on the pedal! That’s about balance as well.

It was great to have Gerry because we learned a lot, but by experiencing the safety rules. Also, 5th and 6th class went for a cycle to the beach while he taught us how to be safe and what to do in certain situations. Sadly, we are finished with him but we had fun!

Active Schools Week

basketballYesterday we did a dance called the ‘Macerena.’ We did it as a group with the Junior Room.

First Múinteoir Deborah briefly showed us how the dance goes, most of us already knew but just to be sure we all went over it!

She played the music and we all started dancing to the ‘Macerena’ and it was so fun. Everyone enjoyed this activity and I definitely want to do it again! 👯

Yoga

On Wednesday, for Active Week, we did yoga at school with a girl called Lucy.

She took us up in small groups to our local community centre where we did the yoga. In my group was Abby, Rosaleen, John Anthony, Jack and I.

First of all we had to take of our shoes and socks outside the door. Then when we went in, there was little candles each side of the hall and there was six mats with towels beside the mats. Also there was calm music playing in the background.

First we did some stretches and then we got on with some yoga moves! Some of the yoga moves were really cool and I enjoyed them very much! Then after we did a few yoga stretches, we just did an exercise to relax all your bones and muscles in your body. You would have to lie down and she would put a blanket over you and then you would have to close your eyes and then just relax! Too be honest I nearly fell asleep! I really enjoyed yoga and it was a really cool experience! I never thought it could be that relaxing too!

Nuacht

Chuaigh muid ar turas go “Horizion” í gCathair na Mart Dé h-Aoine. Bhí am iontach againn. D’fhág muid an scoil ag ceathrú tar éis a h-ocht agus chuaigh muid ar an mbus.
Ar dtús chuaigh muid ar an bpreab-chaislean. Bhí muid ag rasaíocht i gcoinne gach duine. Ansin rinné muid boghdóireacht. Tar éis sin rinné muid aeroball. Bhí sos againn ansin. D’ith mé na ceapairí a rinne mon mhamaí dom.

Tar éis am lón rinné muid ropaí arda. Bhí siad beagán scanriúl. Ansin rinné muid ailleadóireacht. Bhí sé sin go maith. Ar deireadh, rinné muid treodóireacht. Bhí an-sport againn!

Ansin chuaigh muid go dtí Nevins in aice le Mullranny don lón. D’ith mé pasta. Bhí sé go h-álainn. Ansin chuaigh muid go dtí an siopa agus chuaigh muid abhaile.

Tar éis an siopa chuaigh muid abhaile ar an mbus agus bhí gach traochta, ach sona sásta.

Active Team

active-schools-flag
n our school we have have an active team. An active team is basically pupils of our school that form a team to encourage everyone to be active.
How they get on the team, you’er thinking? Well everyone that wants to be on the active team makes a small presentation on why they would be the perfect person to be on it.
I had some tough competition this year because everyone in our school is so talented!!! When everyone had their presentations presented, we all had to vote. The best thing is that you can vote for yourself!!! I guess you’re thinking if everyone could vote for themselves, it would all be a draw. Actually people that did not want to be on it would vote for somebody else 😃.
This year the people that got the most votes were Orla, Ailish, Liam, Eve, Hannah, Siobhan and myself. I was delighted that I would be part of the team. We’re now in the process of making lots of different games for our new playground and are keeping up with trying to make our school even more active!!
The End
From Sophie’s Blog

If you want to be on our Active Team you have to………….. Prove to everyone that you are active and have lots of great ideas!
We all make a presentation about ‘How to be active’, ‘How I am active’ and also ‘How to be healthy’!! You must show that you are committed and a good person to have on the team!
I told everyone what extra curricular I did outside school, and that I’m a fit and healthy girl!! Everyone gave really good presentations this year! Once everyone was done and had presented their presentations, we voted! This year Orla, Siobhán , Eve, Hannah, Sophie, Liam & I, got on the active team, because we proved that we are active and the right people to have on the team!!!!
What we do: – We have a meeting every so often to see if everything at break is ok, and if we need to change any games we’ll try to. – Clear the yard after break. – We make up games for the printed playground And that’s how you get on the Inver “ACTIVE TEAM!”

From Ailish’s blog

We decided to be an Active schools this year. Every one who wanted to be on the active schools team did a slide show on their iPads to show why they should be on active team. When they finished we put it on the big board.
We each voted. We got a piece of paper and wrote who did the best slideshow.
Now the people who got on the active schools team organise a fair way to play at break and set up active activities.
