Science week in the senior room

The senior room asked all of us look at their science experiments for science week.
We went up to the senior room and watched them do their fabulous experiments.
We saw all the liquids like soap and water and baking soda and they tested them to see if they were acid or bases
They also took our fingerprints and footprints and we saw them with the magnifying glass. We could see if we had whorls hoops or arches.
They also did an experiment where the jar sucked the egg inside. It was cool. They even did the alien in the kitchen experiment.
Then they did a experiment which they had a car race. They had a balloon and a toy car. They put the balloon into the car and they pinched the top of the balloon . Then they let it go. The cars moved a bit. At the very end they caused the volcano to erupt. It was brilliant. We hope they do some more experiments for us next year.

Balloon car race and shrinking hard boiled eggs

My Science Experiment

Everybody in 3rd,4th , 5th and 6th did a science experiment for the younger classes on Friday.

My group did a car chase and we looked at discovering what will happen if you place a egg on top of a conical flask. The people in my group are Orla, Shauna , Lisa and me.

First we did the car chase this is how you do it. First we stuck our balloons onto the car. Then we blew up the balloons and let them go. It was good fun and we let the other students have a go.

After that we did the hard boiled egg experiment.

First you dip a cotton bud in the methylated sprits. Then you light it on fire through it in the conical flask. Place a hard boiled egg on top. Let’s see what happens. The egg got sucked into the flask. Why? Because a vaccuum was created when the oxygen was burned away, the egg got sucked into the vaccuum.

Hard Boiled egg and Car Race
Last Friday we all did science experiments. We were put into groups of four. In my group there was Orla, Loran and Shauna. We were doing our experiments for the younger class.

My group had to do two experiments they were called the car race and the hard boiled egg. We did the car race first. We blew up the balloons and put them on the cars and we were ready to go.

After our race we asked if any one wanted to try. We brought Liam, Roisín, Kirsty and Patrick up to try it out. They really enjoyed it.

Science experiments: How strong is an eggshell?

Science week
On the 16-11-2012 we had a science day. Everyone in the senior room had to do a experiment for the small ones. My team was: Padraig, Ava, Rosaleen and myself Leanne.
1. First we broke four eggs in half.
2. After that we put the empty shells on some paper. We used paper measures to check how far apart each one was.
3. We had to guess how many books the egg shells would hold.
4. Padraig asked some small one up to place the books on the shells carefully.
At the end the eggs held 16 big books! They cracked because the books were too heavy in the end.
The small one laughed when the eggs cracked eventually .
It was the best science week ever!!!

How strong is a egg shell?
On Friday my team did an experiment on how strong is an egg shell.

First of all Padraig and Ava cracked the egg shells .Then I put half of the egg shells on a piece of paper.

Myself and Leanne put the books on on top of the egg shells to see how strong they were.

The junior class put some of the books on the eggs. They enjoyed doing that and so did our class.

We managed to put 16 books on the shells before they cracked. I think the egg shells were very strong!

Science week
On Friday we presented our experiments to our younger students. Everybody had an experiment to do.

My experiment was “How strong is an egg shell?” There were four in my group Leanne, Padraig, Rosaleen and me. We put books on the shells and counted how many went on to see how strong the shells were.

Our teacher told us we were really good. I thought it went good too.

I felt really proud of myself and my group.

I had lots of fun. I hope we do it again

Science experiments: Fingerprints and Footprints

Last Friday, we presented our experiments to the younger students in our school. My experiment was “Fingerprints and Footprints”.
First, Alsion shone the sole of Liam’s shoe. Then he pressed his shoe down on a sheet of paper. You couldn’t see his footprint. I dusted the sheet of paper with special magnetic powder. Then I held up the sheet and, like magic, you could see the footprint.

Ailish and Niall took Danny and Ava’s fingerprints. You could see the pattern of their fingerprints. The patterns are usually arches, loops or whorls.

Niall, Alison and Ailish were in my group. Did you know that Gardaí use fingerprints in crime scenes and sceintists take them to the lab to analyse them?

Science Week
On Friday 3rd, 4rt, 5th and 6th class did some science experiments. We did them for the younger students. There were five experiments: The Volcano, How Strong are egg shells, Finger prints and Foot prints, Car Balloon race and Alien in the kitchen. The Volcano people and car balloon race people also did an extra experiment: Base and Acids and Melting a hard boiled egg.

I was doing the finger prints and foot prints with Niall, Ailish and Kian. We took Liam’s footprint and Ava and Danny’s fingerprint. Then after the science experiments we took all the small ones fingerprints.
Our experiment went great and the rest of them did too. I felt good as well. It was a great experiment to do and I really enjoyed that day.

Songs for ‘Carols for Crumlin’

Primary school children from all over Erris will be coming together to sing at ‘Carols for Crumlin’ with Our Lady’s Secondary School Choir, Belmullet as part of a fund raising event for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The concert will take place on Thursday 6 December at 7.00 pm in the Broadhave Bay Hotel and these are the song we are practising.

Science week in our Class

This week is science week. We did lots of experiments like rocket baloons, coke and mentos explosion and the baLloon that inflated itself. We went to the shelter and we dropped the mentos into the coke. The diet coke nearly touched the roof. We did floating and sinking and we found out if they floated or sank. We did alkaseltzer pop . One lid nearly hit Siobhan. We did balloon rocket races. The yellow team and the red team got one point each.

Science week

This week is Science week. We did lots of experments like balloon races and two explosions. We went outside and did a coke experiment. When we put the mentos in to the coke it exploded. The first time we tried it, it did not really work but the second time we did it, it nearly touched the roof. We also did the alkaseltzerpop experiment. There was a tablet blu tacked to the lid and when it mixed with the water it made carbon dioxide. The lid popped off because the carbon dioxide had to get out. We had lots of fun. Next week we will write about the experiments the big children did for us!

Our Active Code

A few weeks ago, we had a little competition in our school to see whose Active Code would be chosen as the school’s Active Code. Lots of children worked really hard, composing songs, poems and raps based on the active theme. They all presented their codes in front of the entire school. It was a very difficult decision however Caolan Maloney was chosen as this years winner. Caolan composed a rap based on the theme of keeping fit. Well done to all the children and congrats Caolan!

An Foireann Glas

Our new Green team was established in September 2012 and has been working hard ever since. They have been monitoring the water usage in our school by reading the water meter every Wednesday. So far we are doing really well! They are also ensuring that there are no leaking taps around the school and are encouraging us all to be more aware of our own usage of water. Keep up the good work guys!

Our Active Flag

We are trying this year for another active flag. We are doing lots of exercise like football. We do exercises with Pat like boxing. At break we play rounders and volleyball .We have a committee with lots of children. Lorcan, Erin, Lisa, Eoin, Orla, Róisín and Seán Antaine are on the committee. The big children had to do a presentation in front of all the school. They talked about all the ideas they had and about why we need to be active. They were really good.
