Our Active Code

A few weeks ago, we had a little competition in our school to see whose Active Code would be chosen as the school’s Active Code. Lots of children worked really hard, composing songs, poems and raps based on the active theme. They all presented their codes in front of the entire school. It was a very difficult decision however Caolan Maloney was chosen as this years winner. Caolan composed a rap based on the theme of keeping fit. Well done to all the children and congrats Caolan!

Our Active Flag

We are trying this year for another active flag. We are doing lots of exercise like football. We do exercises with Pat like boxing. At break we play rounders and volleyball .We have a committee with lots of children. Lorcan, Erin, Lisa, Eoin, Orla, Róisín and Seán Antaine are on the committee. The big children had to do a presentation in front of all the school. They talked about all the ideas they had and about why we need to be active. They were really good.

We have started our fitness classes with Pat.
The first day we did some exercises.
We do some karate moves as well.
We are trying to get our active flag again this year.
We are keeping fit for another flag.
We don’t kick or punch each other in Karate. We just show the moves.

Soup Making

A lady called Maureen came into our school today.
She taught us about organic vegetables.
Maureen taught us to make vegetable soup, it was nice.
I peeled the parsnips.
She gave us all a turn at the blender.
Some people did not like the soup.
By Liam

We made soup today. A lady called Maureen was in our school to show us how to make vegetable soup. She put all of the ingredients on the table. Some of us were peeling and chopping. She mixed them all together with stock and water. She gave us some soup in a bowl and spoons. Then she wrote a song on the board. We all sang the song. Some liked it and some did not.
By Roisin.
Here are the words of our song;

Thanks to earth for the food that we eat,
onions,potatoes and carrots sweet.
For sun and rain and breezes cool,
Ár mbuíochas leat a Rí na ndúl.

For cabbages, lettuces, for beans and peas,
For fruit and berries that grow on trees.
For earthworms, bacteria and honey bees,
Thank you earth, who gives us these!

Rugby

A man called Paul was playing rugby games with us.
It was great fun. I wish we could do it again. We were playing stuck in the mud and using our toaster pop to pass the ball. We will be able to play rugby when we are older.

Craobh Ceannais na hÉireann ~ The All Ireland Football Final

Beidh Co. Maigh Eo ag imirt in aghaidh Co. Dún na nGall i gcraobh ceannis na hÉireann ar an 23ú lá de Meán Fomhair. Tá súil againn go mbeidh an bua ag Maigh Eo. Ní raibh bua ag Maigh Eo ó 1951 agus síleann muid go bhfuil bua tuillte againn anois.

Mayo will be playing against Donegal in the All Ireland Football Final in Croke Park on the 23rd September. Mayo haven’t won the final since 1951 and so we are all hoping that Mayo will win.

There is an account here of how Mayo have fared in All Ireland finals since 1916 here.

We have been looking at the Mayo logo and it shows Croagh Patrick, Co. Mayo where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland built his church. People often go on pilgrimmage to Croagh Patrick. We call it the ‘The Reek’. The logo also shows nine yew trees. Maigh Eo means the plain of the yew trees and each tree stands for a barony. We live in the Barony of Erris.

Tá muid ag cleachtadh ‘The Green and Red of Mayo’ ó na Saw Doctors. Tá an amhrán le fáíl anseo:

We are looking at some interesting facts about the GAA and football in Ireland here. You can download this booklet from the GAA here: http://www.crokepark.ie/getmedia/eefdc605-63f5-4cc4-a2d4-97df8ba8473a/Final-2.pdf

We all had lots of turns on the castle. During the week we all went swimming too, as part of our tour and while the older children went to the cinema, we went to Tumble Jungle. It was super! On our school tour
Last week we went on our school tour. It was fun. First we went to the toilet in the morning and after that we went on to the bus. We were all excited when the bus was going. We went to Enniscrone swimming. When we arrived we all ran into the gate. We got ready and some of us just went straight up the stairs to the water slide. After everyone got dressed we went out to eat our lunch. Some of us got popcorn and ice cream. We went on the bus to drop off the older people to the cinema then finally we got to Tumble Jungle. It was really fun because there were lots of bouncy castles and things to play with. After we went to collect the big ones and we went to Supermacs to get something to eat. Some of us got ice cream and some sweets and then we went on the bus all the way back home again. We really enjoyed our tour.

Barbara finishes Marathon

On Monday Barbara came to visit us. She showed us her medal and her t shirt. She got a medal because she completed the marathon. Hundereds of people entered the marathon. Barbara gave us some sweets. Five of the people stopped but two collapsed. It was very hot. She had to run up hills. She said it was very hard. When she was nearly at the finish line she grabbed Lucy and Eve and ran over to the finish line with them. We are very proud of Barbara!

Cycle Safety

Every Thursday for the past three weeks we have had a cycle safety programme. We had to cycle into school and at half eleven a man called Gerry came in to teach us about cycle safety. He taught us a lot about the road worthy skills which means knowing how to be safe on road. He showed us a lot of skill games too. He always took us as a group: 5th and 6th went first and 3rd and 4th went then. He used to have a few bikes with him in case any one forgot their bike. He brought a couple of helmets too. He had a few schools to go to as well as our school. When he was finished with us (which was last week) he had to go to Longford this week. He was teaching a school up there about cycle safety. It was great fun while he was here and we learned lots from him.

Cycle safety

On the 19th of April a man called Jerry came to the school to start our programme in bike safety. The programme is been run by the Mayo County Council and the R.S.A.

First Jerry taught us how to do a bike check.A bike check is when you check to see if the wheels are tight, the handle bars are tight ,the saddle is at your right height and the brakes are working. Also it is important to check to see if your helmet is fitted properly.

After checking our bikes and helmets we moved onto learning safety skills.Jerry placed two lines of cones and then you had to cycle straight in between the lines of cones.THis was to teach us to cycle straight when a car is passing you. Then Jerry taught us to cycle in and around the cones, this was to teach us about our balance. Finally we had a slow race, who ever touched the ground with their feet was out of the game.I won that game.

I had a lovely day with Jerry and can’t wait till the next session.
