🙏In November, we remember 🙏

Poem by Alice Guerin Crist – November in Ireland

November days in Ireland
The skies are dull and grey,
But Oh! The clear strong flame of love,
That burns by night and day.
As swift and bright the whispered prayers fly to the Heavens O’erhead,
From faithful hearts in Ireland, remembering their dead.

No primroses or cowslips now,
But cold November rain,
No hawthorns in the hedges,
Till Spring comes round again,
But roses bloom in chapels lone and cabins far apart
Dear rosaries of remembrance said to Mary’s loving heart.

“For all the Holy Souls we pray,
God give them peace and light
For the brave boys that died for us,
We pray both day and night.
We can feel their presence near us-we can hear their voices call,
For the dead folk in Ireland are the ‘livest’ of us all”

November days in Ireland
Are just one round of prayer,
Of loving help, and sacrifice,
For those who claim our care.
And Oh! Look up with hope to Heaven: the starry, shining dome,
Is vibrant with the beating wings of glad souls going home.

Lá Fhéile Bríde

Many thanks to our volunteers who helped out on Wednesday afternoon with our St. Brigid cross making. We had lots of fun and it is always lovely to have grandparents visit our classroom.

Feast Day 1st February

Poem about the conversion of Gaelic Chieftan from paganism to Christianity
9
Brigid wove a cross of rushes by a dying chieftain’s bed”
“Brigid what is that you’re making
From the rushes there?”, he said.
Brigid said,”A cross I’m weaving, like the cross where Jesus died.”
“Who was Jesus?” asked the chieftain,
“Why was this man crucified?”
Brigid told the gospel story to a dying pagan King.
Lying silently he listened,
Never saying anything.
Then he kissed the cross of rushes
Saying ,”Brigid, thanks to you,
I have come to love this Jesus,
I will follow his way too!”

Saint Brigid

In the year 450 Saint Brigid was born in Fochart in Co.Louth. In her early years Saint Brigid used to watch and mind sheep and cows. She spent most of her life in Co. Kildare. When she was older she prayed to God so she would be ugly because she did not want to get married. She wanted to be a nun.
One day Saint Brigid was minding her dad’s sword when she saw a poor man. She felt sorry for him and gave him her dad’s priceless sword. Saint Brigid’s father was fuming and his face was scorching up.
A few years later she asked the King to build a convent. The King said no. Saint Brigid said she would take as much land as her cloak would cover. The King agreed and she put her cloak on the ground an it grew and grew. She had more than enough land for her convent. She made a convent and a school.

We celebrate Saint Brigid’s day on the 1 of February every year. She is our patron saint.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week is running this week. We will be learning more about the Pope’s Encyclical Laudato Si’.

The theme for Catholic Schools Week this year is Catholic Schools: Learning with Pope Francis
to Care for Our Common Home.
It is hoped that this theme will help schools to gain an understanding of the Pope’s encyclical letter
Laudato Si’. This is Pope Francis’ second encyclical. Its title means ‘Praise be to you’ and it has the
subtitle On Care for Our Common Home.
The encyclical letter, published on 24 May 2015, discusses the harm humankind has caused on
earth and calls on ‘every person living on this planet’ to make necessary changes in our lives to
protect our planet.
Laudato Si’ deals with many environmental issues including pollution, climate change, drought, loss of biodiversity and the decline in the quality of human life.

Ashling and Sister Patricia’s visit.😃

Today Sister Patricia and her colleague Ashling came in and payed a visit. They came in and told us more about God and the earth.

First we watched a little video. It was a letter from Pope Francis. It was all about how to keep the earth nice and tidy. We learned not to cut down trees and  not to throw rubbish on the ground and to do good  things like put the rubbish in the bin and turn off the lights.

After that we went in to the middle room. There in the center of the floor was a sculpture of two hands touching and little tile things lying around it. The colors were red, yellow and green. The green ones had animals on them the red ones were blank and the yellow ones had people on them. We would have to put them all together and then separate them into groups.

Then Sr. Patricia told Shauna to pull up the big bag. Under the bag there was a bare tree with no leaves at all on it.

Then we found more and more things Liam found a little chest with English penny’s in it and some play money. We gathered everything around the touching hands and it was beautiful.

Then at the end we lit a candle and said a little prayer. I really enjoyed their visit.

Sister Patricia and Aisling.

Today Sr. Patricia and Aisling came to visit my school. They showed us a video called Laudato Sí. It was a message from our Pope Francis. It was about our planet, Earth. It showed the beautiful flowers, trees, animals… But then it showed what the world will be if we don’t stop polluting it. A world with rubbish everywhere freezing and boiling weather.

This is called ‘global warming ‘. We need to help the people in the future. As, the people of tomorrow or next week or next century, will have to deal with what some people of the world have done.
The world is God’s hands and we are in them so try to do what you can and stop the earth from becoming a huge lifeless dull planet.
