Visit to Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme

Our Trip To The Erris Water Supply Scheme

Today, the 14th of November, our school went to the Erris Water Supply Scheme. It was a lot of fun. At first a man called Michael, who works there, showed us around the bottom floor. He showed us a board that showed how the water from Carrowmore Lake got there through the pipes.

Then we went upstairs and he showed us the four stages of treating water. The first stage was raw water straight from Carrowmore Lake. The second stage was treating the water with chemicals, the water was cleaner but not technically clean. The third stage was the clean water we get in our taps and the fourth and final stage was clean water that had been left for a few days.

After that we went outside onto little platforms and walked over water being treated. It was very scary but luckily it was safe.

When we got back to the bottom floor we found out that in that building there were over 2,000 pipes! We also found out when we were outside that if any acid gets on your hands at all you have the wash them immeditiately.

Just before we left we got badges that said “SAVE WATER” and recycled pencils. Then we took a picture of all the school children outside.

I really enjoyed our visit! It was very interesting!

The Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme

Yesterday we went to the ERWSS in Carrowmore. When we arrived we met a man called Michael he was really nice. The first thing he showed us was a really big map of Carramore lake and where it goes from there.

Next we went upstairs to where they clean out the water and where the water goes. We were the first ones to go outside. It was really cool outside there was lots of water one of the things looked like a jacuzzi. He told us all the steps the first thing is the raw water then they have to put lots of chemicals into it to get all the germs out of it and then it is ready to drink. He said it shall be in Healys shop in another hour or 2.

These days we use technology and so do the. If something goes wrong the get a message on their phones and if there’s something wrong with the graph the get a message as we’ll.

They have put a lot of effort into it they even have to work on Christmas Day so ‘DONT WASTE WATER’.

Science week

For science week we did lots of experiments about water because we are trying to get our third green flag. We did floating and sinking. We learnt that you can make things float by giving them a bigger surface area.We also learned to see how much air is in our lungs. Siobhan had the most air in her lungs because her breath blew out the most water in the bottle. Yesterday we did an experiment. We found out that water and oil don’t mix. Oil likes to play with his oily friends and water likes water more than oil. A special ingredient in fairy liquid likes to play with oil and water and pulls them together. Today we did a balloon race. When the air was escaping it forced the balloon forward. Foireann buí won the race. It was really fun. We also did an experiment called alkazelser pop! you put the tablet alkazelser and water into a tube and it made carbon dioxide. There was not enough room in the container for all the carbon dioxide and it soon went POP!! All the experiments we did were very fun.

A visit from the Mayo Champions

A visit from the Mayo Champions on PhotoPeach

On Wednesday two players from the Mayo Minor team came to our school and showed us a big cup that they won. It was a very big cup. Their names were Finan & Hugh. We all
got a chance to hold the cup. It was big but it was light. We got a picture with them.

Our day of Action – Visit to Local Water Treatment Plant

Yesterday we went to the Erris regional water Supply scheme where the Carramore lake is. We found out lots of things. They drain all the bugs, sand and dirt from the water so it is ok to drink. We found out that there is 5000 Acres of water in Carramore lake. We saw the 4 tanks that clean out the water. The 1st tank is for the raw water. That is straight from the lake. The 2nd tank is for the chemicals. The water floats to the top and the dirty lake water sinks to the bottom. The 3rd tank is for the clear water. The 4th tank is for checking the water is ok for drinking. We loved learning about what happens to water before we drink it.
Our school got pencil and badges. Lots of work goes on before water flows from our taps. We must all try to save water!

A reminder of our Green School Water Code

Water Rap

Stop and think,
Turn off the sink,
You have the power,
Take a shorter shower,
Water’s fun for swimming or rowing with an oar,
Canoeing through the rapids but even more,
We need it to survive, to clean and to drink,
So don’t let it all just run down your sink,
Saving water is what we mostly do,
We turn off the taps and so should you,
We also save energy by turning off the light,
It saves electricity day and night,
We also recycle, all day long,
Rubbish in the bin, is where it belongs,
We’ll save our world, it’s a chance we can’t miss,
So future generations can enjoy all of this!

Maths week – Junior Room

Maths Trail Junior Room on PhotoPeach

Last week was maths week. We did loads of fun things . On Monday we guessed how
many teddy bears were in the bucket. Ava won she guessed one hundred and ninety
nine . She was the nearest .On Tuesday we tried to think how much water was in the bottle
but the hard thing about it was the bottle was not full. So we had to guess less than half of the
bottle . It was very hard . But we soon found out that Amy and Kirsty won. We were very happy for
them. On Wednesday we guessed the weight of the book. The book was very heavy for its
size . Michael won. We were delighted for him we clapped and clapped. On Thursday we
guessed how long the string was. John Anthony won. He was amazed and very excited
to get his prize. Then on the following Monday we did a maths trail. The leaders were Miss
Reilly , Miss Garvin , Amy and Ailish. They were very helpful. Miss Garvin was my teams
leader. She timed us when we had to run around the school. Laoise was the fastest. It only
took her 19 seconds to run around the whole school ! !. Another fun task was when we had
to weigh how many beads was the same as a pack of cards. I loved maths week and I
hope we do it next year again. By Siobhan .

Oíche Shamhna le Shauna & Ailish. Acrostic!!:)
