An t-Earrach

spider1Tá muid ag lorg comharthaí go bhfuil an t-Earrach ag teacht mar tá muid ag glacadh páirt sa tionnscnamh Greenwave don ghradam Discover Primary Science and Maths.

Chonaic Gráinne síol froganna in a páirc agus thóg sí pictiúr iontach chun é a thaispeaint dúinn. Tá sé beagán aisteach mar tá an síol suite ar féar atá fliuch. De ghnách, feiceann muid síol froganna i locháin uisce.

Chonaic muid sceach geall le bachlóga beaga ag tíocht air, díreach in aice na scoile:

Nuair a bhí muid ag siúl síos bhothar Pheadair, chonaic muid sabhaircín buí ag fás ar thaobh an bhothair chomh maith:

A visit from Nurse Evelyn

Photo 21-03-2014 13 23 44

On Friday, Evelyn the community nurse came to our school.
She told us all about her job. She works as a midwife and a nurse. She goes to people’s houses if they are sick.
If they are sick, she takes their blood pressure, and checks their pulse. She took Kian’s blood pressure just to show us how to do it. We all took notes. And at the end we asked each other questions about it.
She brought in a syringe, it’s used for measuring blood. The syringe starts from 0ml to 20ml. You need to know maths and science for this job. It’s really important. It was really interesting learning about how she uses maths and science in her life.
She also brought in a stethoscope, she went around the class, checking our heart beat. It was really cool.
It was really cool having Evelyn in to our school. And was really interesting learning how she uses maths and science in her life.

The visit from our local nurse.

Today we had a visit from Evelyn our local nurse. She uses lots of maths and science in her work.
She showed us a syringe and it had ml on it.
She told us about hypothermia and if you get cold you might get it.
She told us our heart beats 72 times a minute.
When you have a pain in your throat sometimes the doctor takes a swab and sends it to the laboratory for investigation and they see what bacteria is causing it.
Evelyn uses a cuff to check blood pressure.
When a baby is born Evelyn has to weigh them to see if they are healthy or not.She uses the scales to weigh how many kilograms the baby is.
After 3 days Evelyn takes a little bit of blood from the baby’s heel.

of the baby’s head. She looks after old people, babies and mammies.
She has to check the weight of the baby. She uses scales for this.

Our trip to the Fire station

On Thursday I went to the fire station . The fire mans name was Joe. He showed us the jaws of life and the fire engine. He put on all of his gear including the oxygen mask and tank. He turned on the beeper. It was very noisy. He showed us pictures of the factory fire. It lasted 4 days he told us. They had to use all the foam in Mayo Sligo and Roscommon.

Gaelic Football

Our Quadblog partners asked us what Gaelic football is. So here goes:

Gaelic football: an Irish Sport
P-ONGTRA5_S
Gaelic is an Irish sport and is a bit like soccer except you are allowed to touch the ball with your hands. Gaelic can get a bit rough at times. Our school has a Gaelic football team, we actually have two, the boys team and the girls team. Their jerseys colours are black and red. Gaelic is a fun sport. We have to wear football shorts, Gaelic boots, football socks and a body warmer.

Our trainer is James Mason. He trains us every Friday. When he trains us, we do hand passes and solos.
The Gaelic ball is hard and round. In school, we play Gaelic football matches a lot in a series of Gaelic football games for schools which is called the “Cumann na mBunscol”. Last year our teams even won the Erris final!

Nearly every county in Ireland has a Gaelic football team. Our own county Mayo has a football team too. Every year the country has a long series of gaelic football games and in the very end the winning county’s team wins a big trophy called the Sam Maguire. Our county’s team gets to the nationwide final but sadly they haven’t won the Sam Maguire in over 60 years! Last year Mayo and Dublin were in the final but sadly, Mayo lost to Dublin and they took home the Sam Maguire. We were very disappointed but we all hope that Mayo will get to the final this year and win it!

Other countries have their own type of sport but I think that everybody is Ireland is happy that Gaelic is our own country’s sport!

The End!

Trip to the Fire Station

Photo 06-03-2014 13 18 36 (HDR)
Last Thursday we went to the Fire Station in Belmullet. First we went into the main room where we saw some pictures of the fires and rescues. The man that showed us around was called Joe Murphy. He is has been there for 36 years. There are 10 men on the fire team.

First he showed us how to wear an oxygen tank on his back. Then he put on a special hood for health and safety reasons. Both of these things need to be worn when they are putting out fires.

Then he showed us the radios that the firemen use to communicate to each other. Next we went into the equipment room. There were 6 lockers. All there equipment was in there lockers. They have a radio on there helmets.

After that we went in to the garage were they keep the fire engines. There was a new one and a old one. Then he showed us all the gear on them. Out the back there was a fire jeep.

The last room he showed us was where they service the oxygen tanks and wear the special suits.

I had a great day!!!!!!!!!. 🙂
