Let’s take a trip to Norway. You can guide your own flight below. Norway is a very cold country, situated in the north of Europe. It is called The Land of the Midnight Sun because it is bright all day and night long throughout the summer.

Conserving water

Today Laura came to our school. She talked about saving water and about polluting water. We tried to think of ten ways we could be polluting Carramore Lake, we only got eight.

We made window cleaner, hand gel and table cleaner from natural ingredince. The recipe for them is really simle. When we made our liquids she put us into groups to try them out. Orla, Shauna and me tried out the window cleaner. We cleaned the staff room window. It was really fun.

She showed us little videos about saving water. There were really funny videos and sad ones too. I had lots of fun with Laura and I really hope she came again because she has lots of fun things to do with us. 🙂 :):)

Today Laura from an Taisce came to our school see how we are getting on saving our water.

First she brought all the water committee into the middle room for a meeting. We were talking about all the ways we save water. we save water in all different ways like we have water saving flushers and taps and a water butt for collecting rain water.

Then after lunch she came into are classroom and explained how important it is to save water and keep the environment clean. Then she showed us a video about some birds who ate plastic and when they died and rotted away you could see all the plastic inside it. It was very interesting.

After that we made some all propose spray cleaner and some window cleaner using natural ingredients. We made the spray cleaner out of washing up liquid, baking soda and some water.

I had a good day with Laura.

Timthriall an Uisce

Nuair atá an ghrian ag taitneamh, aithríonn uisce ó na aibhneacha, lochanna agus farraigí go gal.
Téann an gal suas go hard sa spéir áit a éiríonn sé fuar, agus déantar scamall de.
Nuair a líontar an scamall le braoiníní uisce, titeann siad arí chun na talún i bhfoirm báistí, clocha shneachta nó sneachta.
Fanann an t-uisce ar an talamh agus in aibhneacha, lochanna agus farraigí. Tosaíonn timthriall an uisce an athuair ansin.

Tá 97% d’uisce an domhain sna farraigí agus mar sin ní féidir é a ól, agus 2.15% eile den uisce ceaptha i gcnoic oighir. Is fíorbheag an méid uisce atá ar fáil do dhaoine i ndáiríre; tá sé ríthábhachtach mar sin dúinn an t-uisce atá againn a chaomhnú agus a chosaint, go háirithe más mian linn go mbeidh uisce atá sábháilte le hól ag clann ár gclainne.

World Water Day

Today we prepared for World Water Day (22 March 2013) by bringing home a game for our families to play to help them think about how much water they use. You can download it from the Irish Green Schools website here. We are also doing a survey on how much water we use at home.

You can make your own World Water Day logo at http://www.unwater.org/water-cooperation-2013/home/en/

These are the posters we made to show how we can save water at home.

Water Awareness – Laura from An Taisce

Our water raps!

We had a competition for the best rap about conserving water. Everyone composed fabulous raps.
Here are some of the best of them:

Save Water
Saving water is what we do best
Because we all live in the west,
Putting in the plug
That is good
Because it saves more water
Like we should

Leaking taps and water pipes
Can make a mess and what a splash
So get your tools and get them fast
To save more water and save more cash.
By Sophie

Saving water poem

Saving water can be a lot of fun
Just make sure you don’t let it run

We can save water in many many ways
We don’t like to see things go to waste

When it rains and pours
Use a bucket for
Collecting drips and drops until it all stops

I know we can do it when we put our minds to it
Now let’s get a green flag and make ourselves glad

Saving water is cool
So don’t be a fool and save water.

Have a shower not a bath,
Make sure there are no leaks or drips off taps.

So try your best to save water,
And you wont have so big of a bill.
By Eoin

This is a rap I heard years ago
Some people told me that I should know about water, water,
Everywhere we use it, everyday,
Now let me hear you say, Water!
Ah Ah Ah Aaah we love water.
Don’t set it on fire cause thats just weird for us all,
Water!
By Ailish and Lisa

They have lots of great things,
But the best thing of all,
Is saving water!
Let me talk you through it all:
Step one turn of the taps,
Step two take a shower not a bath,
Step three now thats the craic
Just do it every day and you’ll be grand.

Ballyglass Lifeboat Station

Lifeboat station

In the morning we left the school because we were going to the lifeboat station. I was very excited.
One of the crew talked about the boat and the how they train.
He dressed the teachers in their lifeboat gears. It was funny.
After we went outside and another man showed us the flare. First he showed us the smoke side and then the red light side. It was very bright. They showed us Fred the dummy. They use him for training. He was very heavy.
The teacher took lots of photos.
Then it was time to go swimming. We really enjoyed the day. We had the craic!

By Liam.

On Thursday we went to the lifeboat station.
It took a long time for all my school to go to Ballyglass.
Finally we got there because I was so tired of waiting.
When I we got there I saw a lifeboat in the sea. It looked so cool.
One of the crew showed us his beeper. Everytime there is an emergency it beeps.
Then our teachers dressed up in the crew’s uniforms. It was so funny.!!
The people there had a practice dummy called Fred .
They loved practicing with him .I think he does not like being thrown into the water.
Fred is so heavy.
After that the crew men showed us a flare , one has orange smoke and the other one has a very bright light to help you if you were in trouble.
Then we saw a lifejacket with all the different equipment in it. There is a blowing tube and when you blow into i,t it blows up the lifejacket.
I had a fantastic day out with my school.

Water Audit

On the 24-1-13 Laura from an Taisce came. She did lots of fun things with us. She talked about saving water. She drew a map of the school and marked where we used water in the school. We split into groups. In my group was Orla, Lisa, Ailish, me and Seamus. Each group got two rooms to check. We had to check the office and the teachers toilets. We made questions for intervewing the teachers. We asked the teachers hoe many cups of tea did they drink a day. Mrs Tyrell drank none a day, Mrs Connolly drank five a day Martina two and Mrs Garvin two.

Then we checked if the radiaters and taps leaking. They were not leaking. We checked the teachers toilets next. We checked how many litres the toilets used. They used nine litres. I think it sounds loads but Laura said it was good.

Then we calculated how much we used in the toilets. We calculated them. I can’t remember what we got but she said it was good.

I had lots of fun with Laura. I can’t wait till she comes again.

The End

An Foireann Glas

Our new Green team was established in September 2012 and has been working hard ever since. They have been monitoring the water usage in our school by reading the water meter every Wednesday. So far we are doing really well! They are also ensuring that there are no leaking taps around the school and are encouraging us all to be more aware of our own usage of water. Keep up the good work guys!

Maths Week

During Maths Week we all had lots of fun doing our Maths activities. The senior room made lemonade – enough for everybody in the school! They had to work out how many lemons, water and sugar they would need and had to measure them all carefully. It tasted delicious! They also had lots of fun estimating and measuring outside too.

We also made a metre squared display. Each child had to cut out two 10cm square pieces. Some children had to cut out more than two. The older children stuck all of these 10cm pieces together to make one big Metre squared display.

In the junior room, we did lots of Maths activities. We made some patterns using ourselves and we had fun using our dice cards and our counters. We also collected pictures of Maths things that are all around us. The senior room helped us too. Some of the children played Maths Boardgames, some children got to do Maths on the IPAD and some did their Manga high challenges on the laptops. It was great fun!

The food we eat

Over the past few weeks we were learning about the food we eat. We learnt about lots of good facts. We learnt about how everything was first made. First there was a big explosion . that made the stars, the moon, sun and all the planets then one star exploded then that made more and more and more and more and more! Then we learnt about a little dog called Paw’s and there was a storm coming. The dog went under the table. He knew that something was not right. On the first day Maureen came we made soup. Some people liked it and some people did not like it. On the next day Maureen came she spoke about habitats and species. She gave us all a habitat or a species. I was a frog. Frogs belong to the pond habitat. We used thread to show how all the habitats and species are connected.
