The visit from our local nurse.

Today we had a visit from Evelyn our local nurse. She uses lots of maths and science in her work.
She showed us a syringe and it had ml on it.
She told us about hypothermia and if you get cold you might get it.
She told us our heart beats 72 times a minute.
When you have a pain in your throat sometimes the doctor takes a swab and sends it to the laboratory for investigation and they see what bacteria is causing it.
Evelyn uses a cuff to check blood pressure.
When a baby is born Evelyn has to weigh them to see if they are healthy or not.She uses the scales to weigh how many kilograms the baby is.
After 3 days Evelyn takes a little bit of blood from the baby’s heel.

Nurse Evelyn came to our school . She taught us about her job . She uses maths
and science. She uses cm to measure the size
of the baby’s head. She looks after old people, babies and mammies.
She has to check the weight of the baby. She uses scales for this.
Evelyn is very interesting.

Gaelic Football

Our Quadblog partners asked us what Gaelic football is. So here goes:

Gaelic football: an Irish Sport
P-ONGTRA5_S
Gaelic is an Irish sport and is a bit like soccer except you are allowed to touch the ball with your hands. Gaelic can get a bit rough at times. Our school has a Gaelic football team, we actually have two, the boys team and the girls team. Their jerseys colours are black and red. Gaelic is a fun sport. We have to wear football shorts, Gaelic boots, football socks and a body warmer.

Our trainer is James Mason. He trains us every Friday. When he trains us, we do hand passes and solos.
The Gaelic ball is hard and round. In school, we play Gaelic football matches a lot in a series of Gaelic football games for schools which is called the “Cumann na mBunscol”. Last year our teams even won the Erris final!

Nearly every county in Ireland has a Gaelic football team. Our own county Mayo has a football team too. Every year the country has a long series of gaelic football games and in the very end the winning county’s team wins a big trophy called the Sam Maguire. Our county’s team gets to the nationwide final but sadly they haven’t won the Sam Maguire in over 60 years! Last year Mayo and Dublin were in the final but sadly, Mayo lost to Dublin and they took home the Sam Maguire. We were very disappointed but we all hope that Mayo will get to the final this year and win it!

Other countries have their own type of sport but I think that everybody is Ireland is happy that Gaelic is our own country’s sport!

The End!

Our visit to Áras Inis Gluaire

A long time ago scientists put a special buoy in the ice in the North Pole to measure how deep the water is,how salty the water is and how cold the water is. Then it started to drift with the waves down the Atlantic Ocean. Then another iceberg slid over the top of it and it lost its signal for a long time. But then while it was sliding down with the waves It got its signal back again! The iceberg had melted! But then it lost the signal again as it went down the waves and then the waves brought the buoy to Blacksod Bay where a man called Fergus found it.He called someone to come check it out. The man told him it was a buoy that came from the North Pole. He told the civic center and then decided to display it so that people could come and visit it! Our school went to visit it. It was so cool ! It was yellow. The buoy must have met LOADS of mammals along the way, dolphins, polar bears, penguins, seals and maybe even whales! We could not lift the bouy! It was so heavy! Our favourite articles in “The Primary Planet”

Tom Huddlestone

(Image from The Primary Planet, January 2014)

In this months ‘Primary Planet’ the article entitled ‘The end of the Huddlefro’ tells about Tom Huddlestone. He agreed not to cut his hair until he scored a goal in the Premier League. He didn’t cut his hair for two and a half years, until he scored against Fulham. He got his hair cut and raised nearly 50,000 for charity called Cancer Research. He plays for Hull City and when he was playing for them on Saturday last and his hair was really short! He had to wait for a week to get his hair cut because his barber was in London for the weekend. But he finally got it cut and he was happy to raise so much money for charity!

image52 Weeks 52 Jobs

(Image from ‘The Primary Planet’, January 2014)
In this months ‘Primary Planet’ there is an interesting article called ’52 weeks 52 jobs’.

In it we learned about an English man, Matt Frost, who decided to take on the challenge of changing a job every week!

He did this for 52 weeks. It’s amazing and the best  part is all of Matt’s wages went to charity.

It was a very tough task to do. He stuck to the different jobs without taking no time off work at all. I probably wouldn’t be able to get a job every week.

This was a great thing of him to do. I would love to try it and see how I’d do.

Nelson Mandela

Last week I read a very interesting article about Nelson Mandela in ‘The Primary Planet’. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th 1918. His first name was not in fact Nelson but Rolihlahla. He was given the name Nelson by a teacher because in those days all African children were given English names because they were easier for British colonials to pronounce. His father died when he was nine and he was taken in by the acting chief, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. Education was very important to Nelson Mandela and he attended Fort Hare University.

In 1956 Nelson Mandela and 155 others were arrested for treason. The trial for the case lasted over five years but Nelson Mandela was found “not guilty”. Nelson Mandela became the leader of a secret army called “Umkhonto” which fought against racism. In 1962 Nelson Mandela was accused of plotting to overthrow the government and he was sentenced to life in prison in 1964. Many people ordered that Nelson Mandela was released from prison and he was finally released from prison on 11th Febuary 1990.

Nelson Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and all black people were allowed to vote for the first time. He wrote a book called “A Long Walk To Freedom”. He won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Nelson Mandela retired from president in 1999. He was married three times and had six children but only three of them are still alive now. Nelson Mandela will be remembered as “Father of a Nation”. Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December 2013.

Our Green Code

Water Rap

Stop and think,
Turn off the sink,
You have the power,
Take a shorter shower,
Water’s fun for swimming or rowing with an oar,
Canoeing through the rapids but even more,
We need it to survive, to clean and to drink,
So don’t let it all just run down your sink,
Saving water is what we mostly do,
We turn off the taps and so should you,
We also save energy by turning off the light,
It saves electricity day and night,
We also recycle, all day long,
Rubbish in the bin, is where it belongs,
We’ll save our world, it’s a chance we can’t miss,
So future generations can enjoy all of this!
