The Enchanted Forest : a story written by Amy

The Enchanted Forest
Hello my name is Bella. I am 69 years old. I would like to tell you about the enchanted forest I explored when I was 11 years old.
Now we shall begin. It all started when I was at school. I never ever liked playtime. For me it was being pelted with hard balls and being shouted at. I figured that if I just stayed out of their way I wouldn’t get hurt so during break I usually sat down at the back of the class and read my fairy-tale books. All my books were about enchantment, sorcery and breath-taking adventures! My favourite book was about a magical forest that a little girl explored every day! “Someday I would like to do that!” I thought but then a voice in my head said “Lower your expectations! That will never happen!”. Once the voice said that I would usually sigh and continue my book.
Every day of my childhood other children would call me “Bella the Bookworm” in class. That would always make me frown but the teacher never said anything. One day when I was coming home from school three boys ran after me. I knew they meant trouble so I ran for my life. I could feel pebbles hitting off my back but I didn’t care, I just kept on running. Through my childhood my only friends were my books but I knew my books couldn’t save me now. I couldn’t find anywhere to hide and I was lost so I didn’t know the place I was in but I knew these boys knew where they were. They knew everywhere. Suddenly I could hear running again and I knew the race was on again so on I went. I stopped at a big gate that said “Raffley Park” and another sign on it that said “FOR SALE” but by the looks of it I thought no-one would want to buy it. I could still hear the boys so I climbed over the gigantic gate and landed on the cold ground. At least I was safe…… or so I thought.
My heart kept on beating. It seemed to be beating 20 times per second. I could hear crows screeching as if they were in pain. I soon decided to explore the park. It got more beautiful the deeper I explored it, but when I got to the end it was incredible! I didn’t believe my eyes! All the trees were made from red liquorice and some of the grass was made from chocolate! I stuck my hand in a hole in one of the trees and I pulled out a hand-full of maple syrup! It was delicious, I would never taste anything like it again but my favourite thing in the park was a little bluebird. I called her Beauty because of her majestic wings and her lovely light blue colour. She turned out to be a great friend and I used to show her all of my books. She adored the stories of adventure and loved the characters.
I came to the park every day after school. Even though it was a couple of miles away and I used to always get lost I didn’t care and luckily I always came back home safe. One day I came home from school and I saw my Mother waiting for me. She usually didn’t do that so it was a surprise. I walked straight up to her and she told me that Father had something exciting to tell us. When we got home from school Father was waiting for us. He had prepared a lovely meal for all of us which was unlike him. He said “Good news! I finally got work from Mr. James again!”. “Oh how wonderful! What for?” Mother asked. “He wants us to tear down an old park for him. “It’s called something like Raffley or Rabbely Park?” he said. My face dropped. Sure I was happy for Father but what would happen to Beauty and her friends? And what would happen to all the trees? I was sure the place they would go to would be bad. I slammed my hands on the table with rage. “FATHER! DON’T TEAR THE PARK DOWN! IT IS WONDERFUL!” I roared at him. ”The forest is beautiful, full of magical things!”. ”So this is what you’ve been up to lately?” said Mother unhappily. I nodded. Suddenly I began to cry. Mother tried to comfort me but I still could tell she was mad. “It’s not my decision “ said Father “But I will try to tell Mr. James. Alright sweetheart?”. I nodded again but that’s not what I was thinking.
I knew Father needed work and I also knew we couldn’t stop him so on Monday morning I got up at 6:00AM. I knew they were working at 7:15AM so I had to run. The park took a while to get to, especially if you were running. I took a rope from our house and tied myself to a tree. I was going to protest! Everyone in my school knew that I was going to do it but thought I wouldn’t go through with it so they all came to watch. All of the workers and my Father tried to get me down and one of them even called Mr. James! Around 7:45AM Mr. James came. He decided that the park wasn’t big enough for him, even though it was massive! I decided that I wouldn’t say anything if he wasn’t going to use it. Father rushed over to me and hugged me tight. He said “ Don’t ever frighten me like that again!” and I replied “Don’t worry, I won’t!”. Mother rushed down to the Park and asked if I was ok. She even brought me to the doctor to make sure I was ok! I was delighted that the Park was safe and our family always had our picnics there from then on.
At school the boys now knew that I was brave so they stood out of my way and I wasn’t always in the classroom at break. A girl around my age whose name was Anna came to our school and we became best friends. I showed her the Park and she loved it too.
So in the end my life was very happy. I hope it will stay that way!
THE END!

Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme

Today all of our class went to Carrowmore lake. It was really good everyone had a great time.

When we got there a man called Michael showed us a big board that showed us how they got the water through the pipes and into the building. It was really cool.
When we were finished Michael brought us upstairs to see the dirty water with lots of germs in it change into lovely clean water. It was really cool. I liked watching that. While we were upstairs Michael gave us a pencil and a badge. He was really nice.
After that we went outside to look at a big machine that took all the germs out of the water and then they put some fluoride in to clean your teeth. Michael told us that some people think that there shouldn’t be any fluoride in it, but in 1995 all children’s teeth were more healthier and stronger than the water without fluoride.
I found out some facts like…..
There are over 2000 pipes in the building,
It was built in 1983 and was finished in 1985 and much much more.
I really enjoyed our school Trip it was great. Michael was really nice and I would love to go there again. By Lisa

Trip to Carrowmore

Today we went to the Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme. It was really interesting. A man called Michael was talking to us and showing us around. We saw how the water gets treated along the way. The first stage is the water straight from the lake Michael called that ‘raw water’. The second stage the water had been treated with chemicals. The third stage was clear water but Michael said there still could be bugs and things in it so he puts fluoride and chlorine in it to clean it out fully. The fourth stage it’s ready to drink and be sent off to shops and homes. Michael said that Healy’s in Barnatra are the first place to get the water.

When we went into the first room there was big blue pipes which the water flows through down to the treatment room. At the back of the room was two monitors. One of them said 0.054l and the other one said 0.063l, I think that measured how much water flows through the pipes and if anything goes wrong the monitor sends him a text message.

While we were upstairs we went outside. It was scary but we all held onto the railings so it wasn’t too bad. There was lots of different pools with the different stages of it being cleaned. There was the sand cleaner. The second pool was the water with chemicals in it. The next one was clean water and so on. Michael said the pools are up 3-4 meters high.
When we went back inside Michael showed us some graphs on his computers. It was quite cool. Then he gave us some pencils and badges. I really enjoyed my day and I wish we went sooner.

Visit to Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme

Our Trip To The Erris Water Supply Scheme

Today, the 14th of November, our school went to the Erris Water Supply Scheme. It was a lot of fun. At first a man called Michael, who works there, showed us around the bottom floor. He showed us a board that showed how the water from Carrowmore Lake got there through the pipes.

Then we went upstairs and he showed us the four stages of treating water. The first stage was raw water straight from Carrowmore Lake. The second stage was treating the water with chemicals, the water was cleaner but not technically clean. The third stage was the clean water we get in our taps and the fourth and final stage was clean water that had been left for a few days.

After that we went outside onto little platforms and walked over water being treated. It was very scary but luckily it was safe.

When we got back to the bottom floor we found out that in that building there were over 2,000 pipes! We also found out when we were outside that if any acid gets on your hands at all you have the wash them immeditiately.

Just before we left we got badges that said “SAVE WATER” and recycled pencils. Then we took a picture of all the school children outside.

I really enjoyed our visit! It was very interesting!

The Erris Regional Water Supply Scheme

Yesterday we went to the ERWSS in Carrowmore. When we arrived we met a man called Michael he was really nice. The first thing he showed us was a really big map of Carramore lake and where it goes from there.

Next we went upstairs to where they clean out the water and where the water goes. We were the first ones to go outside. It was really cool outside there was lots of water one of the things looked like a jacuzzi. He told us all the steps the first thing is the raw water then they have to put lots of chemicals into it to get all the germs out of it and then it is ready to drink. He said it shall be in Healys shop in another hour or 2.

These days we use technology and so do the. If something goes wrong the get a message on their phones and if there’s something wrong with the graph the get a message as we’ll.

They have put a lot of effort into it they even have to work on Christmas Day so ‘DONT WASTE WATER’.

Science week

For science week we did lots of experiments about water because we are trying to get our third green flag. We did floating and sinking. We learnt that you can make things float by giving them a bigger surface area.We also learned to see how much air is in our lungs. Siobhan had the most air in her lungs because her breath blew out the most water in the bottle. Yesterday we did an experiment. We found out that water and oil don’t mix. Oil likes to play with his oily friends and water likes water more than oil. A special ingredient in fairy liquid likes to play with oil and water and pulls them together. Today we did a balloon race. When the air was escaping it forced the balloon forward. Foireann buí won the race. It was really fun. We also did an experiment called alkazelser pop! you put the tablet alkazelser and water into a tube and it made carbon dioxide. There was not enough room in the container for all the carbon dioxide and it soon went POP!! All the experiments we did were very fun.

Our day of Action – Visit to Local Water Treatment Plant

Yesterday we went to the Erris regional water Supply scheme where the Carramore lake is. We found out lots of things. They drain all the bugs, sand and dirt from the water so it is ok to drink. We found out that there is 5000 Acres of water in Carramore lake. We saw the 4 tanks that clean out the water. The 1st tank is for the raw water. That is straight from the lake. The 2nd tank is for the chemicals. The water floats to the top and the dirty lake water sinks to the bottom. The 3rd tank is for the clear water. The 4th tank is for checking the water is ok for drinking. We loved learning about what happens to water before we drink it.
Our school got pencil and badges. Lots of work goes on before water flows from our taps. We must all try to save water!

A reminder of our Green School Water Code

Water Rap

Stop and think,
Turn off the sink,
You have the power,
Take a shorter shower,
Water’s fun for swimming or rowing with an oar,
Canoeing through the rapids but even more,
We need it to survive, to clean and to drink,
So don’t let it all just run down your sink,
Saving water is what we mostly do,
We turn off the taps and so should you,
We also save energy by turning off the light,
It saves electricity day and night,
We also recycle, all day long,
Rubbish in the bin, is where it belongs,
We’ll save our world, it’s a chance we can’t miss,
So future generations can enjoy all of this!

Ava’s Scary Story

imagesCA4L3GE5“Bye” called Lilly and Jane. They were going trick or treating. This was their favourite time of year, (exept for Christmas). Jane and Lilly don’t like very scary stuff. They went trick or treating to Ailish’s house first.Ding Dong went the door bell.

“Hi,’ said Ailish.

“Oh thats really scary!’ said Lilly. Ailish was dressed as a scary twin. They got lots of sweets from Ailish. Next they were going to Lisa’s house but………………….

They took the wrong road. What was going to happen? Suddenly it started to rain. It got heavier and heavier, then it began to hailstone. ” AHHHHHHH” cried Lilly. ” Quick to that old house!” yelled Jane.

They ran as fast as they could. They waited and waited but the weather didn’t get better.” Oh dear, ” said said Lilly. ” Let’s explore the house.” said Jane. They went into the first room, it was a bedroom. Suddenly there was a big bang. ” AHHHH!!!!!” they screamed.

They ran for their lives!. When they got back home they didn’t know WHO, WHAT OR WHERE THE BANG CAME FROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Using Augmented Reality with Aurasma

We wrote stories about ourselves called ‘Mé Féin’, took photos and inserted them in the stories and printed them off. We pinned them up on the classroom wall.
We used these sheets as trigger images.
Then we made videos about ourselves. We got one classmate to interview us and one to film. It was great fun. Then we uploaded the videos as ‘overlays’.
Finally, we used Aurasma to create ‘auras’ for each one so that when you use an iPad to look at our pictures and stories (the trigger images) on our classroom wall, the seem to become alive, (just like Harry Potter’s newspapers), and you can see our videos.
In this video, we see some students showing others how it all works.

Cinderella quickly ran out of the ballroom and her shoe fell off. The prince picked up the glass slipper Cinderella left after her. The clock struck 12 and Cinderella had to walk home. The next day the prince went to every house in the land trying to find the perfect fit. He got to Cinderella’s house and said ” can I try this shoe on you and anyone else in this house please?” the prince said sadly. ” yes ” her sisters said. Her sisters were first. She agreed. Cinderella sat down and the prince tried it on her. “The perfect fit” he said. Soon the prince and Cinderella were married and all was well.

Waiting for Sam

Waiting for Sam
One word can describe how I feel about the match, excited! I am hoping Mayo will win the match. I wish I was going, the atmosphere would be great!

I think that Mayo will win the match, 2-9 to 1-8. If Mayo do win, Dublin won’t give up without a fight. Dublin seem to be favourites this year so it might be good for the Mayo team and Dublin might expect they will win and end up not properly playing.

As most people know we beat Dublin last year in the semi-finals. We also haven’t won since 1951, which is almost 63 years! I feel like this year is our year!

Go Mayo! By Amy

Waiting for Sam

Mayo and Dublin are in the All Ireland Final. We have been waiting for a few
weeks now until the match.

We’ve all been so supportive. The other day we had a Mayo day and everyone had
green and red everywhere.

Mayo haven’t won the Sam Maguire for 62 years now. People say that they are
cursed because the last time they won they started beeping outside a funeral. But
I don’t believe it.

Everyone is so excited. I can’t wait till Sunday.

Waiting for Sam

Mayo are in the All- Ireland final against Dublin on the 22-09-2013.

Mayo have a better team this year than any other year. They are more fit and plays better football. Aidan and Seamus O’Shea are playing better in midfield, and can get good scores.

Chris Barrett is in the panel and plays in half-backs. He scored two good points when they were playing Tyrone.

There’s rumours going around that Mayo are cursed. The last time Mayo won Sam in 1951 they passed a church, and they were beeping outside a church while a funeral was on.

I hope Mayo can win Sam Maguire and bring it back where it belongs.

Waiting for Sam.

It has been over 62 years since Mayo have won. I hope Mayo win this year and bring Sam to our school.

Chris Barrett is in half –back so we hope he scores again we could be in the lead against Dublin. I hope Andy Moran will lift the Sam McGuire.

This Sunday is the All- Ireland final Mayo vs. Dublin. I’m so excited. Mom and Dad have tickets already but we didn’t get any. We don’t know where we are staying yet, but we don’t care as long as Mayo win.

Mayo hadn’t won since 1951 so I think it would be awesome if we won. I’m so excited and hope that Mayo bring the Sam back home!!!

Waiting For Sam

I am so excited about the match on Sunday. I really really hope Mayo will win and bring Sam back to his real home.

I think it would be really good if Mayo won, because they have not won it since 1951.

I do not believe in ‘The Curse’ and I don’t think any of the Mayo team should either, and I hope they don’t give up and think that the curse is at them.

Hopefully Mayo will come home
with the Sam.
